Hi Fraggles...

It might sound a bit silly, but i'm very curious about it:

What's the difference between Ambient & Chill Out?

Any definitions welcome...

I usually associate ambient with pure soundscapes with no drums/rythm...

Chillout's everything else

CHILL IS PART OF AMBIENT
AND NOT AMBIENT IS PART OF CHILL

IT SOUNDS MORE OK LIKE THIS

well...... true ambient is like "background noise" eg. in The Mystery of the yeti the first track where you feel like you are in a Tibeten city, you hear ppl talking and singing, dogs barking etc......            - The yeti loves to drink shnaps too, so he's like a real shaman... he, uhm, uh, if you want to contact him, you have to put some alcoholic offerings in front of the forest.

and another definition, quoted from the inventor of ambient and mayb the inventor of electronic music in general- brian eno:

" An ambience is defined as an atmosphere, or a surrounding influence: a tint...
Ambient Music must be able to accomodate many levels of listening attention without enforcing one in particular; it must be as ignorable as it is interesting"

if u want to know what it means - listen to "music for airports" (if u havent done so already )
or ishq-orchid (a.a)

this term has many interpretations nowdays but this is the real meaning.           Life is too short to eliminate all risks.

Chill out is not really a genre, just music to chill out to. And usually you do that to calm music like ambient.

Ambient is an english word, just look it up and you see what it means.           Ut ameris, amabilis esto.

indeed: Brian Eno

search: Music for Airports (1978)

first ever Ambient album - there's a page
with Eno's description of ambient
in the original record ..
Stoic sampled a few lines from it.

of course, Stockhausen & Reich were already on it
for some time, but this wasnt called ambient ... yet.

also check http://www.execulink.com/~robin1/mu_ambient.html for some titles ..

---

chill out - search on: KLF - Chill Out (1990)

first ever chillout album -
not your standard issue Ultimae or Waveform chill,
but this one goes back some years in time as well ..

.. just to get an idea where or how
"it all started"
