Goa < 1998
Psy >= 1998
At least that's what the "gurus" at the time decided; which resulted in penning "Psytrance" as the genre name. As I understand it, they simply renamed goa trance, because it was no longer JUST from Goa; it was a worldwide genre by this point. Calling the genre purely "Goa Trance" with all these different and emerging sub styles from around the globe, not necessarily tracing themselves to Goa geographically, simply became a misnomer of what the genre actually was. As I understand it, a song could come out, produced exactly the same, but in 1995 would be called "Goa Trance" and in 2001 would be called "Psytrance." As I understand it, Psytrance is just new Goa Trance. So this whole "New Goa" thing confuses me... unless of course these artists are from or living in Goa, India.

That's actually pretty much how I remember discussions about the name going at the time, except that as far as I know the music itself never came 'just' (or even mainly) from Goa; whilst I believe there were a couple of studios there in the mid 90s, most of the music was made in the UK, Israel, Germany, France, Australia... however for a few years most people who were into it first came into contact with it at parties in Goa simply because there were very few events outside Goa where you would hear it, and when this balance started shifting so that more people were dancing to it outside Goa than in, people started referring to it in different terms - terms that related to their experience of this kind of music.
Although Goa Trance to me has a very definite and recognisable atmosphere, it's never meant (for me) "trance made in Goa"; it's always meant "trance like you'll hear in Goa", as opposed to the other varieties of trance which were around at the same time which you would hear in clubs and parties all over.

I agree again with Colin.
I don't think the goa atmosphere is only identified by its melodies (although they are the key element), because there is also a lot of goa tracks with less melodies and the same feeling...
I would dare to say that goa trance is a special kind of psy trance that touches the spiritual through melodies or the alien through pure sound
Nowadays one can distinguish better goa from psy (if that has any interest at all) filtering out from all psy the tracks that have too many breaks and bass changes

goa music not being made in goa is almost the same as chicago house or detroit house not being made in those particular cities, it simply defines a style (but for those, it originated in those places)
