hello everybody!

i'm doing a research on goa for a course in university and cameto the question what exactly the differences between 'goa' and 'psy-trance' are. if you have any hints i'd be very glad.

furthermore, i'd like to ask you which tracks you consider 'classic' goa, and which tracks you consider 'classic' psy-trance.

tnx for any help!

my opinion:

goa trance is about huge walls of (orientalish) melodies layered onto each other. apart from the melodies (which are, more often than not, pretty complex), goa trance is rather simple. no complex rhythm structures, no sound gimmicks, not much special fx etc. it's simply about rocking off your socks.

psytrance on the other hand is deeper, weirder in case of sound design, more complex, with a lot more gimmicks and experimentations than goa trance. it's more about creating twisted psychedelic landscapes than teethbrushing melodic patterns.

classic examples:

goa - Crop Circles - Lunar Civilization

psytrance - Hallucinogen - Gamma Goblins

modern examples:

goa - Filteria, Lost Buddha, Ethereal

psytrance: Prometheus, Logic Bomb, Talpa

hope that helps. for further input, you might as well use the search option.

Yes, the search has your answer.

Anak has a point, but I think slightly different, quoting myself:

IMO the terms goatrance and psytrance (psychedelic trance) in most sentences have the same meaning, except that some people sometimes use the term goatrance when refering to the very first psytrance tunes (specially the melodic tunes).

I think that if most goatrance tunes where released today they'd be called psytrance and possibly full on (just like a lot of people call Filteria full on, but you can feel it sounds like Goa).

I think most tracks which were called goatrance and were played at Goa, not at the very begining, but just before it had its "big boom", would be today called full on or dark full on.

Astral Projection many more were making psytrance tunes which probably would be called full on if released today around 1995/1996.
The Muses Rapt released their classic Spiritual Healing in 1997. This track is pretty much full on, but if you search for it on Psyshop you'll fing they call it Goa Trance...

In another words, the main aspect that defines if something will be called full on (happy/melodic/morning, groovy/high-tech, dark/evil/night, tech-trance/technoish or whatever) today is the bpm, which is usually from 138 to 148.

Goa Trance – he is characterized by energetic thumping drumbeats, rhythm and loops. His bass line isn’t melodic, as opposed to the bass line of Psytrance. Goa Trance is a hybrid of Classic Trance, EBM, Indian classic music, psychedelic Rock, Electro. Goa Trance is the only or at least the most appropriate music form to be considered Alien’s music – such as Aliens would record. Or maybe the newest Trance style Nitzhogoa.

Psychedelic Trance/Psytrance (Nightmare) – he is characterized by hypnotic arrangements of synthetic rhythms and complex layered melodies created by high tempo riffs. His bass line is melodic. The melodic bass line of Psytrance is an element taken from Garage House. To get assured, here’s an example: the song “Don’t give hate a chance” by Jamiroquai.

Afgin is Goa trance

the difference between goa and psy is like that between rap and hip hop...goa is not as popular today as psy...psy has a heavy emphasis on the baseline and base and is more stereophonic by nature..goa on the other hand does not have emphasis on the baseline its more twisty and trebble oriented and is meant to be heard on shitty sound systems (SSS) and yet it sounds great           When death comes to your doorstep, make sure you are alive

argh "difference between rap and hip hop"

The difference is that rap is a type of vocal performance and hip hop is a genre of music.

There is no such thing as "rap music" unless you just mean "music that has rap in it" which includes a lot more than just hip hop.

I know where we were in the north UK, in the mid-90's we stopped calling it "goa trance" and started calling it "psy(chedelic)trance" because me and all my friends couldn't afford to go to goa. Besides which why would we need to go to goa, when he had a fountain of entheogenic delights right on our proverbal doorstep, in the form of "liberty caps".

sorry but hiphop is a culture in which you have breakdancing, graffiti, djing and rapping. nothing to do at all with music until the media started to call rap, hiphop...           On 2011-03-08 23:13, moki wrote:

But you can't call the music "rap" because that isn't its only feature--it is also defined by the type of beat and the way it uses samples.

Anyway...offtopic

that is not true with beat etc.. hip hop is a culture or subculture like the post above mentioned is a good reply to this.
If it is a us gangsta shit beat or european psycore beat it still is rap music.Beat,MC& a cutter (or more cutterz)is rap ,rap is an element of hip hop.
I never liked the term hip hop, doing my psycore stuff for more than 2 decades now.           https://soundcloud.com/shivagarden
