I would say, Dark Prog wld be the most apt title for this style...

but Shadow Fx, Tetrameth, Merkaba, etc don't sound dark at all but definitely belong into the genre we talk about here.
i can totally understand CCRs point though. so it seems we're back to zero ... we need a new term for our subgenre. a short term that makes sense!

Hi guys
I'm building a website at the moment that will list all these kinds of releases, labels and artists.... I kept wishing that there was one place I could go to each month and find everything released in this vein without missing some incredible gem that escaped under my radar, so I figured maybe I should build it. (I hadn't seen this thread before lol).
I'd really appreciate your thoughts on naming the site. I think the music that I'm focused on is quite genre-defying in its very nature and as a result its really tough to find terms that will communicate this clearly.
So far I settled on listing the style(s) as Psygressive, Dark Prog, Zenonesque & Psytech. I think all these terms are a little problematic in their own way.
What do you guys think? Does it communicate the "niche" clearly? Is the inclusion of the term "Zenonesque" unfair on other labels and artists?

i'd really appreciate such website so much !!! though i'd let others find a name for that platform
as for the "zenonesque issue", i think it's a good name for some tracks coming from Zenon Records and other labels as well (i have a clear vision of how zenonesque sounds in my head) but music-wise this genre is too diverse for just saying it's all zenonesque.

For sure, dark prog seems to me a much better marking for a lot of Glitchy Tonic, Uroboros, Occulta, Cosmic Conspiracy etc... zenonesque in my head conjours up more kind of Tetrameth, Shadow FX, Brujo's Bowl, Merkaba sort of sound... and psytech (which is well ambiguous) to me is some of Grouch's work, Krumelur, Sensient when in Open records mode etc..... ? I notice Sensient has been posting his new previews up on soundcloud listing them as Future Prog.... I have no idea where that's come from, but could that be a useful term for the more zenonesque end of things?
Linguistic labels suck anyway... shame they matter but signposts are important for finding your way around I reckon.
Glad you like the idea of the site... if I manage to get things done roughly according to some schedule it should land online around the start of July.
Btw, I'm thinking about posting reviews of all the new releases each month there too... do you guys think its a good idea or is it better just to list them? Would anyone be interested in writing review content? Or would anyone like to contribute some other kind of content?

what a great idea man! i'm definitely down for contributing in some way.
As for the naming issue, it's a little complicated indeed.
personally i don't like the term 'dark prog' that much. Pick, Cujorius One, Hypogeo, etc those artists make dark prog as i see it, and all of them create great tunes of course. so they belong into this sub genre indeed, but as i said Tetrameth, Merkaba, Grouch, etc ... there may be some darker atmospheres but it's not 'dark' for my senses.
well, psygressive/zenonesque is not bad but even those terms might lead to misunderstandings. what about WTFprog, haha!

once you have it ready let us know to help you spread words =)
would you want the labels to get in touch with you about new releases for your website ? if so, you could let them decide about genre names.

after a while i think zenonesque it's an only sound from Zenon Records, but to be honest even in Zenon recs and it's "zenonesque" it's becoming a formula, as i've heard in recent tracks from Smoke sign or Merkaba, who sound so much like tetrameth with those god damn boring samples of universal conciousness...i mean, i enjoy them when i listen tetrameth but i feel many are now following that "trend" and it's getting boringggggg...time to go back , Dark Prog for me again. glad CCR did that statement, i was waiting for it

fair enough Anyer... must admit my ears aren't picking it up that way at all.... one of the things I love most about everyone on Zenon is the individuality of their style. Merkaba, Smoke Sign and Tetrameth all use voice samples about "conscious"stuff yes.... but for me personally thats pretty much where the similarity ends. Their styles are more similar to each other than they are to, for example, Grouch or Sensient - but they each have a very different and instantly identifiable essence within their music.
I like the Dark Prog too though, many producers on that end of things have a really unique style and essence too.... slytrance, reactant, sonic tickle etc....
And then of course, Hedonix.... who I really wouldn't call Zenonesque but I really wouldn't call Dark Prog either.... Hedonixesque maybe? lol

Hedonix it's like psytrance with a touch of twisted energies faster and harder than zenon recs style... and about the similar boys, well what else you want, thats more than enough similarity to almost create a "new formula"... tetrameth will always be the pioneer in that aspect but in my humble opinion we don't need more tetrameth's... just 1, i've just recorded a zenon recs only dj set, sounds awesome, but with "zenonesque" as a so close terminology adding different sounds apart from the label per se make's it not-zenonesque...right? so, it limits the "versatility" of the Genere, that's why the Dark prog it's a helpfull and more keeps "unified" the group of musicians...well, my opinion junkie talkin...
Respect!

i think there are big differences between Tetrameth, Merkaba and Smoke Sign. Tetrameth uses very much voice samples most of the time, but the music itself is very eclectic, there are many different ideas and atmospheres within each track, a totally unique style. Merkaba is focussing on a healing sound structure and positive atmospheres most of the time. so it's also a quite unique style. with voice samples yes, but much less than in Tetrameth tracks. Smoke Sign is going a very different way too in my opinion. there is more "pop" in his sound, influences from european prog artists like Funky Dragon are very obvious. So, there are not more Tetrameths than the one we know. But even if there were some, i would welcome them very happily.
