The following is an interview of Aghori Tantrik taken by Free Press Journal (India)

Why trance is nirvana for him!

"Music, particularly trance for me is like a new Big Bang. Every time a new beat is played, it's like a new parallel universe is created. It's another reality…" Siddharth Agarwal, aka Aghori Tantrik, a professional DJ since the age of 16 reveals. Aghori Tantriks are a censored tribe who believe in deconditioning the mind and spirit. Members of the Aghori drink from human skulls and practice cannibalism in the belief that eating human flesh confers spiritual and physical benefits, such as prevention of aging.

FPJ asks him why he chose the name for his project. "Because it symbolises liberation. And psytrance is liberating for me. It's like acupuncture for the brain. There are so many frequencies and grooves at the same time - you know, you're dancing even while being healed."

When he was 14, he was already into producing house music. "Then I felt the need to express myself. In any case, I was what you'd call a typical computer geek and used to play around with software. Later I acquired a degree in sound engineering in Australia." That was where Siddharth was further exposed to the trance scene. "The music culture out there is quite admirable," he says, adding that he's performed in Australia and Russia as well. "They actually understand and appreciate trance there. It's not like it is in India, where people think it's all about getting drunk and high." But isn't that what trance is about? Isn't trance all about getting high on drugs and booze? Aren't they the reason for the notorious rave parties to thrive? "These are false notions people have of trance. You know the old hippies that used to perform would train their bodies for trance. They would do things like yoga and meditation - the 'shamanic way' of achieving nirvana through the beats of trance." And what is nirvana for him? "Nirvana is reality. This is reality. For me, though, reality is a hallucination. Every sound has an explanation. It communicates in some way."

"In fact," he further elaborates, "I wouldn't even call the events 'parties' or such sprees. It's a ceremony. It's more about being with yourself, about being one with the music." "Real trance is something else. What our ancient yogis used to practise… in fact, even Goa Gill doesn't smoke up," he reveals.

But he is quite resentful of such events being unfairly targeted by the moral police. "Music is a creative expression - it's an art form. Why are they interfering in someone else's happiness? They should give freedom to people to perform in open spaces - so that people are not confined indoors and indulge in shady activities. When we receive messages from above, it needs to be passed on…" explains Siddharth, who says trance music is supernatural in nature.

He then speaks about his forthcoming album - 'Shiva v/s Kali' - a collaboration of artists. "Shiva is about universal consciousness, whereas Kali is the destructor. This album plays on these two realities - on these two dark elements." Siddharth Agarwal can be reached on http://www.sonictantra.com

It's time to move on to the next step in the psychedelic revolution. We've reached a certain point, but we're not moving any more.
