I think it has its own niche now much like "full-on"... all part of psytrance, but a distinct part nonetheless.

If you look at origins I think it may be safe to point to Parasense. They were doing this years ago...and then came Kindzadza, Fungus Funk, etc. Perhaps some credit could also go to Droidsect?

Correct me if I’m wrong basilisk, but due to psyshop, Parasense first album released in 2001. But I heard they started to work in 91’. If someone know what they released from those years it would be helpful… coz if they made dark also back then they maybe were one of the pioneer of that style. *but I find it a bit hard to belive coz in 91’ it was the start of all this scene… and back then what most of the projects were, is Goa. The dark we heard today startd 2001-2 (example- parasense (acidance records 2001)).

Traveler, Pelon, as I told before here… I don’t think infected in any album unreleased whatever made dark music from the kind we talk about here… same to Tim. By dark I (will repeat) mean to twisted (minimal or not) dark psytrance. (Example- Psykovsky, xenomorph etc’).
You can define this style by many things that made it so unique and separate from other: the very low bass note, the slow develop (in most cases) of the sounds… like a story you know… The twisted effects and sometimes the ‘horror’ samples put into.
I hope it more clearly now.
I didn’t hear (yet) Droidsect music so I don’t know if they make dark or not… and when they were founded. When was their first release?

A directed question to the thread: in which year released the first (dark) album and by whom?

The answer will help in solving this issue…

The darker style has been inside Goa and psychedelic trance damn near since the beginning.

Xenomorph released the album Cassandra's Nightmare back in 1998. And that album was DARK. No question about it... Listen to Abominations and compare it to some of the stuff that has come out recently...

Goa had many moods to it, usually in one song... Sometimes, it would have some darker aspects to it, and later on in the track it would get some of those melodies that are uplifting.

GMS used to be pretty dark too, believe it or not. They released a few songs on 3D Vision compilations (Download has one of the best) They also did a "mythical" track with Infected Mushroom called "Death Killer" It never got released and floated around the Mp3 land for a long time.

Parasense had their first release in 2000 on of all labels.... Tip World...

The dark sound was around for a long time and will still always be there. It is because of the fracturization on psytrance into the subgenres like full-on, progressive, dark, and whatever other name you feel live giving a style that there are these so-called "movements".

mubali - I think you right about the Goa issue... I can agree with you on that one.

Xenomorph …full on?! And what about Qlippoth, Cassandras Nightmare…full on?! I think you need an ear check traveler…

You remained me someone that asked me if I know some DARK FULL ON artists… wtf?!
Full on and dark has nothing to do with each other! So stop invent new stupid (!)genres \ categorize dark as full on and the opposite….

I agree with mubali, the darker style has always been there in goa, it has just been more underground and is not so well known as the melodic goa style.
I think there are two different kinds of dark music out there these days.
Penta, Datacult, Gregh on Earth, Ka-Sol and similar artists represent imo one direction in night music of today and the roots for that style of sounds go back to Front242, Skinny Puppy and other dark synth stuff like that.
Parasense, Kindzadza, Fungus Funk and alike represent a different type of night music for me and I see the roots for that style lying in punk (maybe metal as well).
But yeah, it is difficult to talk in styles, because obviously people perceive music very differently and what for some is dark night, others call full-on           "*´¨)
