i think we are still talking about the same thing 
check out EVP - Robotiks, CCL - OOb, Naked Tourist - Three lines in a row RMX.
i search for that kind of sound as well, and preffer it when is the actual beat that gets funky and fractured, without much reliance in the actual bass. Point in the case: The track Datakult has with acid goblins in V/a - DMT: the first gram, and pretty much anything by Kemic - Al, its the only thing that gets me dancing really

ahh check out The Vicous Spirals if you havnt heard them already it should be just what your looking for unfortunately not much released

i personally don't think of them as "dark" but others might: Grapes of Wrath and Jahbo bring the funk with their bass... same with Double REL
