OK, So quoting Dark Force from here:
http://forum.isratrance.com/domestic-bass-please-read-before-flaming/page9/
Colin OOOD Says to Dark Force:"Why don't you give tips? Surely you must have some of The Knowledge - you've had releases, after all, since your name is in blue. Come on, share the goodness like you're asking!"
And Dark Force replies: "i would if someone starts a 'dark-force bass' thread or something."
So I am starting this thread for you, Dark Force. I enjoy your tunes and other dark artists . I do not hear enough info on making Dark Psy Bass. Just the full-on sound. So I'm taking you up on your word.
What are the crucial elements in making your bass "dark"? How does it differ in process to making full-on bass? |

hmmm, there is no "dark bass". the dark part comes from your composition. -) What one person sees as a bad ass dark bass, another might see as a cool texture that would sound great in a morning track as a background point of interest if filtered differently and pitched around a little bit.
Now that we got that out of the way, we use mostly, in no particular order, Filterscape, Cronox 2, and Predator for our basses. It's certainly no secret that most basses are some variant of a filtered saw wave, but a saw wave from Cronox does not produce the same sound as a saw wave from Predator or Filterscape. There are minute differences in the waveforms used that make huge differences in the sound produced. The filters in all these synths also respond in different ways and need to be toyed with by you.
Try them out (along with any others you happen across) and see which one you like best.
Since the texture of the bass plays such a large role in our music, we play a lot with the symmetry of the waveforms, filter envelopes, and note length. One nice thing to do that frequently yields interesting results is to program a bassline with 64th note length notes separated by 64th note silences giving a quarter note feel with a texture that you can't achieve with 16th notes.
Another bunch of things to check out are the weird numbered waveforms that Predator offers. One nice one is Spec 45 =)
These are nice things, but the only way to make the bass you want to hear is to keep making basses that get closer to the one you want to hear. It just takes time.

to me i does not make sense to deny that dark-psy has it own specific bassline character, although they can be very diverse also. but: there are dark-basslines. and yeah pitch them up some semitones or filter it different and it might sound full-on or so, but thats not what we are talking about here. |

yes, there are dark basslines, but this topic not about basslines. It is about making a synth patch that will respond appropriately after you write a dark bassline. Still, a synth patch is not "dark".

Let me clarify; I meant that a "dark" bass patch can be used effectively as an atmosphere, a lead, or whatever else in any kind of electronic music. The synth patch doesn't determine its use. you do.

yes, there are dark basslines, but this topic not about basslines.
|
|
it's about the specific artist "Dark Force" revealing his bass technique, like he said he would.

| Yep, That's right. So we await.
But tips and advice from anyone on the dark side is welcome. I like these ideas from Unwashed Tomato. I never thought about 1/64th note thing.
My favorite dark bass comes from Ocelot. I wouldn't mind hearing from him also. |
