all good points thus far. I'm not sure how well you'd be received on reservations. I know the rezs out in AZ aren't all that receptive to throwing any kind of non-powwow dance party on their land. I guess if you could convince them that a trance party is the natural evolution of the powwow...

you're going to fuck up - a lot. you might get lucky enough to be able to pay the rent for a few months, but you'll likely never be able to quit your day job. You'll have to deal with all kinds of crazy things you've never even thought about, and you'll almost always be living on the financial razor's edge (unless you have a really good day job). And at some point during every event, and probably many times in between, it will hit you why it's so worth it to keep going.

facebook is going to be your best promotional tool right now (maybe Google + if it takes off), but you should definitely continue to use IsraTrance as well. I can't remember how many people have found Overmind Works in the last six years because of posts on this forum.

yep, i'm mr.gentry basilseed of astral planes. and i envy all ya'll southeasters that throw these big ol fests.

currently just being able to handle small local outdoors, and club things. currently working into quadraphonic sound so that we'll have a large scale multi-point sound system for our events.

us triangle folk are like…. 15 strong? there's nothing up here, so we're making something.

good times.

Well, Ill tell teh story of Nuclear Fishin', June 07.

I managed to befriend previously a sound guy, a generator guy, and various djs not all of whom are guys. Um... well actually thats pretty much it...

Sorta.

It was as if i was the battery for a trance party device, without me pushing the idea it wouldn't have taken place like it did. Now before you dismiss that as egotism know it comes from a good place, an astonished, agog place.

In order to meet a few of the djs, I had to shlep to Eugene Oregon from Reno, 14 hrs in one shot, get to a party on a strange farm in a drizzle at 2am, no idea how to get ahold of the promoter, no idea wtf is going on or even if i was on earth. Somehow I managed to meet the guy, and was fortunate enough taht the guy who took my slot (i was written off as a nosho) let me on the...

well, tehy were the size of Tech 1200s, all the buttons were the same color, all the writign only slightly lighter than teh btutons. About 30 buttons. All the same size. Took me a few mins just to find the damn phone jack... After a shloppy start 'introing' it, i played 20mins til the tarp covering the gear blew away and they called it.

Thats how I met the guy who played peak-hr at our party down here, who drove down, with his buddy a morning dj too, for shits and larfs.

Threw word around to other ppl i knew from Tribe (shudder) who made it an adventure just like i did humping up to eugene. Kind folks all...

The only thing taht would have made it perfect was if the forest service had stayed asleep. As it was we had a solid 8 hrs of rocking, around 50 ppl showed up, an LED ball was 'plugged' if u unnderstand, i refuse to elaborate, the players who played played it like they ruled the earth, and the only pre-fines cost i paid, was 20 gallons of unleaded.

It was SO worth the fines, just picking myself off the floor finding everyone was willing to co-catalyze was al the returns i could have asked for.

So in short; put the feelers out, you never know who is just itching to use their Mackies or truck hundreds of miles for no clear rational purpose.

I do advise more care taken regarding locale. In our defense, the sound guy had run 'movie nights' out where we had it without hassle in the past, blasting Godzilla movies while strange ppl cavort in the pines.

I had a lol at the cops' 3 distinctly different stories, tho.           .

that's something that should also be touched on:

cops.

DO NOT EVER ARGUE WITH/PROVOKE/DISRESPECT THE POLICE!!!!!
terrible things will happen. no, you don't have a right to do parties. no, you, in fact, only have the right to get arrested, fined, and have your gear stolen by them.

we had a renegade down in the silar city backwoods along stone river in this beautiful glade. we thought it was completely secure. the land owner gave us permission and all that. so we play from about 3pm until somewhere around 5am.

course the cops show up with shotguns and bad attitudes. poor bastards fell into the little swamp and had ticks up their collective ass, so they were less than generous. came in guns held high.

course before anyone can say a damn thing we cut the music, i walk right up to them and say "good evening officers, Gentry Basilseed, Astral Planes Productions, what can i do for you tonight?"

totally caught em off guard. the interaction turned into them asking "so…. how'd ya'll kids get all this out here? you're like a mile deep in the woods"

oh, we walked it in, officers.

"damn, ya'll kids are wild. we've never seen anything like this before. that music was bizzare. didn't sound like that techno stuff to me"

so i gave them my card and invited them to my next event

point of the story is, if you do shit legit, and do it hard and professional, stay sober and ready for anything, you'll do very well.

hell, i gave up drugs to do this. best decision i've ever made.           Doof Local

In my (far too many) experiences with cops, the best bet is to STFU, be polite, not subservient but just, you know like you would treat a clerk at a store or something, let them do ALL the talking, don't try to argue anything (they called our party a rave), dont be a dick... And, while youre not likely to be let off the hook, a mature, calm, confident, not-fucked-on-everything demeanor goes a LONG. WAY.

Its important to remember that you cant reason with the Law, the abstract idea. That is what the cops are when tehyre on duty. Not people, per se, but embodiments of the law.

Youre only required by law to reply with your name and SSN, anything else, its best to STFU, if they try and press, lawyer time. If theyre harassing you without pretext, ask if you're being detained , if youre free to go. They are legally obligated, after taht, to either arrest you, or leave you alone. Of course, in teh woods, miles from oversight, things may not adhere to the letter of.

Im just happy waht happened to some others in Reno didnt happen to us; they also tried a trance party, and... Highway patrol, sheriff, and BLM in full regalia plus canines.

it's true that you're not required to produce anything other than your name and SSN, but you don't want to be in that position. i use a series of aliases with my production company that are as creditable as my "real" name.

just be smart enough to shut down and move out the very second the pigs show up. and of course they're people, they aren't our people, and they're wrong for what they do, but they're still human. and we are the last embodiment of being human.

through being polite, controlled, professional and a true human, you'll find that the dogs of the dying government are more than willing to not be shits.

that's providing you don't have drugged out naked people everywhere.           Doof Local

oh of course, the best way to deal with the law is not to

but its good to know your rights, cops do take advantage of ignorance sometimes

Yeah, the cops who busted our gig were professional in demeanor as were we. Other than their suspiciously myriad explanations for being there, and sneeringly calling it a rave, it went as well as such a thing can.

I had a brief insanity in my early 20s which caused uncontrolled sign-holding and fuck-the-police yelling, but Im told Im now cured. But I learned how not to get arrested, and how many of us don't really know our rights.           .

By many definitions (including most dictionary definitions and legal definitions) of the term, psytrance parties ARE raves.

It's pointless to try and argue that trance parties and raves are different because neither term is particularly well-defined.

oh, of course the authorities consider our scene the rave scene. why would they care differently. thats one of the biggest reasons we need to assert ourselves as solid professionals and not look like a bunch of degenerate drug freaks.

also, i was under the impression that the rave act (new or old) were never officially passed.           Doof Local

Well to me the difference is the average mainstream gig, everyone just wants to party, but most trance gigs have more of a purposeful nature; you know, teh whole dancing thing to activate certain brain states, collectively sharing a real human experience, all that, which of course is present in the mainstream to a degree...

I guess, the MAIN difference is that;
Iev never seen anyone gnawing pacifiers
never been offered a light show
drug use and purchasing is discreetly handled
people DANCE
the general entusiast-to-gawker ratio is more than 7:1
djs are allowed much greater room for error (often hilariously so)
the average age is older
ive seen kids at trance parties and havent wondered at their parents' depravity levels           .
