Copy-protected psy CDs

Warning: highly subjective rant!

Hello again... I have this contraversial topic to bring up, about copy protection on psytrance CDs (an extension of a debate you're all sick to death of, so if you are, quit the topic already!!). Recently I purchased Phaethon's Voyage which was released on Oktava Records, and as I usually do when an order of CDs come in I went straight to my computer to make back-ups. But this one CD wouldn't even be recognized by my computer whatsoever, so at first I thought there was a problem with it! I went back over to my decks, threw it in, and sure enough - it played without a hitch. I was perplexed but it didn't take long to figure that some sort of copy protection was on there. Now at first I was thinking it to be a minor irritant... I -always- burn copies of my CDs in case my binder gets stolen/lost at a party or whatever, and the originals stay on my shelf at home for listening. But for this CD, I would have to put the original in my binder and take it out with me. Ok, so its a small risk, and one I was willing to take.

The next week I had a gig... went out and played as per usual, with all high-quality slow-burnt copies of my originals, plus this one Oktava CD that I hadn't been able to figure out. I've been keen on CDs because I have never had technical problems with them the same way I have with vinyl - as far as I'm concerned if there are less overall fuckups then there is a huge benefit to using the CD medium. Well I got to playing track 8 from the Oktava CD later on in my set and GUESS WHAT? It starts to skip uncontrollably in the Pioneer CDJ-1000! Now I had egg on my face, and for what? Ironic isn't it that every one of my burnt CDs never cause a trouble and the ONE original in my binder can't properly be read by what is virtually an industry-standard CD deck. I had to cut it out & scramble to put the next song on... at this point a minor irritatant has grown to be a real pain!

So what's the deal here? This kind of copy protection doesn't make it impossible for anyone to burn the CD - it just makes it difficult and causes the output to be of lower quality. It robs me of my right to make a back-up, and I can't listen to the CD in my computer. It possibly caused a huge headache-inducing situation in a gig I played, and I'd risk losing the CD any time I take it out if I hadn't gone to the trouble of recording the analog output and recompiling the CD (afterwards unfortunatly - hindsight is a mutha). And ultimately, I don't think I would ever buy another CD from Oktava Recs until I knew for sure that no such system were being used on any future releases. This is a system which punishes the people who actually buy the music! And if no one minds me 'taking the piss' with a stupid phrase I see ruining the art on all the CDs I buy, consider this:

Copy protect kills your music!

...like seriously guys! If I BOUGHT your release I don't think I need to have it hammered into my skull, ok? just give me something pretty to look at! so, anyone else there have a similar trouble, or have thoughts on this issue? I hope any label guys reading this might consider these points, purely from a dj's point of view, when thinking about using protection on their own releases.

...and a final note: there's always the slight chance that I got this wrong and there is just a problem with my computer or something since I don't know anyone else who actually OWNS this CD - just people with copies and mp3 downloads, all of which naturally have no complaints with the product!! The ironing!

wow, what a story mate... i'm sorry this happend to you....
i had similar problem with the backing up of OTT-Blumenkraft... but your problem went to the next level cause i played in CDJ100's and it was fine.

i would like to hear more about this from Oktava, or anyone that knows what sorts of methods they use.           "On the other hand, you have different fingers."

yeah, thats stupid, i guess the problem in our scene is downloading, and not copying cd's.

If you bought the damn thing it should be working on any system with no protection. You might as well d/l if you cant get it to work on your computer. i think what oktava is doing here is really counterproducxtive , there should be added benefit when you buy, and not regulations.           Check out my album: http://www.ektoplazm.com/free-music/gay-satanic-hippie-tiefenrausch

dude to download a file u need to put it on a computer which can be done by only copying the CD data onto the computer.....

i have nothing against copying but just that everyone doesnot copy only to back up the CDs some copy to trade!!!!!!

well, my copy of phaetons voyage is working just fine on pioneer 100 as well as 500 (havent tried with 1000)

I with it that labels put the protection on cds.

Although, I think its a matter of time when they make the software that will be able to rip protected cds too (if they havent already)

There are ways to get around it. I can think of at least 1 way to do it. It takes a bit of work. I'm sure others have thought of it, I wont share it.

Anyway, I think that copyprotected cds are wrong. If I buy a cd, I should do whatever I want with it (within the boundries of the law, of course).

i just read an interesting article about copy-protected cds and thought some of you also could be interested in this kind of information
so there are several kinds of protection such as Cactus Data Shield (CDS), key 2 audio, MediaCloQ, SafeAudio Version 3 (SAV3) etc. Some of them won't be hard to get around, others are not so easy. Firstly disable autorun for your cd-rom, because once it's started this protection is activated and try to copy your cd if you have 2 cd-roms, it may help. Secondly examine the cover for the following marks:

http://www.websound.ru/articles/technol/cdprot_img/cdprot_clip_image004.jpg

http://www.websound.ru/articles/technol/cdprot_img/cdprot_clip_image007.jpg
they will tell you that it's protected CD, though you may find nothing
then you may try Clony XXL (http://www.clony.tk) that can help you to find out what kind of protection is used.

Cactus Data Shield
Try EAC (http://www.exactaudiocopy.de), if it won't help try a trick with a marker pen (you should carefully paint over the last track on cd, which can be seen as a thin 1mm track, so right along the edge of your cd)

Key2Audio (Sony DADC)
CloneCD or marker pen again

MediaCloQ
EAC in secure extraction mode, marker pen or follow this link: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/70597

The last firmware update of your CD-Rom also may help it to recognise protected cds.

I've had this problem too but one solution I found was to create an image of the cd with an appropriate program (I used isobuster), then load it with deamon tools and then capture it with eac.

my my...
backing up a CD for personal use is perfectly within your rights as owner of a bought CD.
The rights to publically play it is not yours even if you pay for the CD, as described in every media release (usualy around the edges of the CD or on the cover) :
"Unauthorised copying, lending, hiring, public performance and broadcasting of this record is prohibited".

so don't bitch

c'mon, let's not be ridiculous here... imagine everyone stuck to that rule - what would happen?

Thanks to everyone for the tips on beating the copy-protect... I had recorded the album through my line-in, but will try to break past the protect digitally to get the full-quality tracks...

I just hope the message gets out there - copy-protect schemes on psy cds are an illogical solution to the mp3/copying problem that punishes ONLY those who actually buy and support the labels/artists.

As Helen sais, it is your right to make a copy of a cd for private (only yourself) use. only one copy maybe in use at a time etc etc ... this for backup purposes as basilisk mentions           www.psytracks.com :: Brand new website for sharing your psytracks with the world.
