So, I am thinking, what would be a good entry level tube compressor for mastering?           Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:

i think there is none, varis maybe or second hand phoenix mastering . these comps are the last thing i would get in mastering chain but maybe i m wrong to think this, but their compression action is slow it s better used in addtion to a other compressor that handle dynamic shaping but you could do that with software maybe

be sure to try before buy ! you might be disapointed considering the cost depending what you except. with software you can get 85 , 90 % there.

you need high quality one or it wont be suited for mastering, slow smoothed transients ,not very flat frequency response ect.. with sidechain filter like the pheonix Me is a plus for bass heavy music

from what i learned and read, if you dont have a real budget (like $2000 or so, talking abt new compressor) go software.           http://soundcloud.com/vipal

DC8C, learn how to use it really well, and save yourself thousands!

I actually find myself using less and less compression when mastering these days, as most people are already using so much limiting and compression on individual tracks and then their mixes. I often bypass compression completely, and if I am using it, then it's very rarely more than 1.5dB of GR.

Pro mastering houses usually have two or three really high quality pieces for different effects and sounds, a vari mu, a fet, a vca, and an opto etc. They'll often be used more for "vibe" and "colour" than any significant amount of gain reduction.

You won't find much at mastering level for less than about $1500 per channel (so around $3k for stereo). Like PoM said, better off sticking with software. Cheap hardware compressors generally won't do your tracks any favours. Unfortunately, "entry level", "tube" and "mastering" don't really belong together.

Here's a common list of hardware comps found in many mastering studios, in no particular order, if you do decide to go for it:

Manley Vari Mu
Pendulum Audio OCL-2
Cranesong Trakker (pair)
Cranesong STC-8
Thermionic Culture Phoenix (Mastering Version)
Foote Control Systems P3S ME
GML 8900
Tube Tech (Various models)
Knif Audio Vari Mu II
API 2500
Fairchild 660 (pair), or 670 (the grand daddy)

...and probably a load more I have forgotten!

I use a pair of Chandler Germanium Compressors, but they are not so common for mastering (same with other popular tracking compressors, such as EL Distressors, 1176's or LA-2A's etc.)

you also need good converters if you don t.
for a good starting point of really pro hardware mastering set up, u would need a eq , a comp and pro converters
with this you can already make very high quality work if your monitoring is ok ,with plugins too but hardware is slighty better in some aspect using both yeld to best results.

i think you can t go wrong with these compressor api 2500 + smart C2 or a other ssl clone with sidechain filter + a vari mu like the phoenix mastering .

it s trusted and popular setup for club music, there is maybe better choice..but with this you can t go far wrong .
all the comp Babaluma mentioned are also highly regarded for mastering.

btw if you get some good deals what you can do is rent a mastering studio to do the work there, so you will get experience with the gears, hopefully top notch monitoring condition, will help to make right choice for your setup . good to make connection and find more work with meeting guys in the buisness too.

I am seriously considering renting a mastering studio... but then again, I might as well send it to Colin... not much more expensive...           Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:

something i dont get is why everyone wanting /going outboard go for comps ? i did too but now i wouldn t..eqs are way more powerfull and usefull for mixing electronic music or mastering and can have good color too.in the end both is best offcourse.. but i think eq first is better choice as it s what we use the most.

The thought behind getting a tube compressor is that unlike digital compressors, the distortion overtones on a tube compressor are harmonic to the fundamental, therefor more pleasing to the ear in general. I know there are good emulators out there, I do like the DC 80 and bought it, but... just sayin'....
