nope - not lost @ all - but we wonder. not about the community here but the hard life/work to present chillout music to the people.

I think chill-out is very much on the rise, everywhere on the globe, even in the US.
Psy-chill is probably the most growing style in our community. More and more people turning to chill.

I would say especially in the States.
I have never bought as many psy albums by American artists as I have in the last year and a half.           Load Universe into Cannon. Aim at Brain. Fire.

Hell yeah chill out is getting more massive every year, look at how many trance producers are now moving into making downtempo tracks... It's not so huge here in australia but I"m pushing it with a few monthly partie's with local dj's... but from what I've gathered America is the place to be for downtempop styles

san francisco has many people who listen to a wide variety of chillout/ambient/electronica/electronic-non-dance-music.

they coagulate into a number of different scenes.

virtually every dance music party has a chillout room (of highly varying quality), and there are a certain amount of chill-only events.           dub beautiful collective
bringing elitism to the masses.

I think you need to define what type of chillout you mean - psy-ambient/dub, Ibiza-style chill (Caf'e del mar / buddha lounge style), meditative ambient ('new-age' static ambience), pure lounge grooves or maybe beach house (Hed Kandi style)...

Chillout is everywhere, and you might not notice that. It might seem like its invisible comparing to trance, since people who are into trance/psy are usualy very selective and know exactly what they listen to. 'Normal' people who buy CDs or go to lounge bars/cafe's, are not necesarily interested in knowing what they hear, as long as it is comfortable and not irritating (which is exactly what chillout music is about - complimenting/enhancing the environment).

The issue is that in many places the management doesn't pay too much attention to what background music is played, as long as it doesn't bother the customers. And its easier to buy a stack of Del Mars (the most famous chillout brand name) and let it shuffle in the background.

I believe that there is a need for chill out music - the question is, what chill out music is needed?

yeah like helen said type of chill out is important.

what i see and feel is, interest in ambient/chill out with psychedelic elements is rising.
not as a background music while talking but buying cds, going to gigs...
and lots of different tunes comes out, which is also very good.

p.s.:your question is a bit weird to be honest.search some, there a lot of good labels, talented artists...

Again...it depends on where you are,If you are in any random lounge just "cafe del mar" could make the job, here some psy-chill could freak them out,or may be not because it´s just enviromental music and they´re not really paying attention to it.
In a trance party I would say that you HAVE to "freak them out" but, again, some cafe del mar could be accepted with no major problems...for the same reason mentioned above.
We´re condemned to the irrelevance !?!?!?
