does it really make a difference? chill out can be any music to chill out to, it coule be psychedelic rock or deep soulful jazzy house, or laid back hip hop

am,bient tends to refer to downbeat music that is specficially intended for chillling out to, but really they can be the same or completely different

It's more or less the same.
ambiant comes from a french word (meaning environment)
and everybody knows the meaning of chill-out           Majority is never right!

its not the same,never..

the translation of the words is right but music therms have different meaning from a dictionary.

the main difference between ambient and chill out is that the point of ambient is to make some atmosphere without take your attention on music and chill out in opposite take your attention/mood and make it chilly and relaxy.

shiva, one thing for sure - then u listen to ambient u chill

mmm.. look, today its right to say that ambient is part of chillout. in meaning that chill out is not style in genre but genre itself.
the chill out that i speak about is a "trance" chill out that was only and ultimative for trancer chill out music. infinity project, celtic cross, banco de gaia, red seal.. u know what i mean ?? i call it today "psy chill out" and its right, but try remember the times then ambient or dub or .. downbeat house were less legitimate for trancers.
so, "psy chill out" is not part of ambient and just one more style into the genre.
u are right as i said at the begining, today therm chill out include much more then ever..

i think that as a genre ambient is part of the term chill out .
chill out does not have to be ambient, i chill out with Dub, atmospheric D n' B, and other spacey music that has nothing to do with trance .
but thats all definitions and who really cares

ambient is a flow/wind-of-mind, chillout is more downtempo and freestyle experiments with the mind;) thought it can be described differently and apart;)

in your question both are chillout but closer to downtempo           I may rise, but I won't shine ...
