Hey,
I'd like to buy WAV electronic music without an outrageous "WAV handling" fee (like on Beatport.com). Where should I do my music shopping? |

Cytopia.org has the best price on WAVs but selection is limited. With just about every other carrier (TID/Juno) you are going to hit $3 or $4 per song. I avoid this by buying much less.
I attribute the high prices to the jump from vinyl to digital. CDs (and their associated per song price points) are only really big in some scenes such as ours whereas for techno, house, drum 'n bass, and other larger genres consumers have long been accustomed to the cost of music on vinyl. If a record with 2-3 songs costs $10 to $12 then the price paid for MP3 is lower (and for lossless it is roughly equivalent). Since the vinyl-based genres form the basis of most EDM download sites such as Beatport these prices were acceptable to consumers and have since become locked in as industry standard for sites of this kind. Cytopia offers better rates precisely because psytrance is their focus... or at least that's my working theory.

Cytopia.org is the only place I have seen that offers .wav at the same price as .mp3. I've gotten a few tracks there in the past, but I agree that recently their selection has been really disappointing. |

labels were just to slow to realize cd was dead.
wav sale is not an option for the future - its a demand for the present. make it now or we will loose a whole generation.

^^ humm..cd is not dead..well at least not for me..how many dj´s spin on mp3´s or wave format for pc?
people trend to create the situation of cd being dead because of the low sales..well if more people bought original cd´s then it wouldn´t die me thinks

Check out Vibrasphere's online shop. They have all sorts of stuff from their back catalogue available for sale in WAV and the prices are quite reasonable.

Hi guys,
You are right. The WAV prices on most shops are outrageous. Partly the reason is the one mentioned above "larger genres consumers have long been accustomed to the cost of music on vinyl". So shops that sell all genres charge more for psytrance releases too.
Another reason for this is that all shops, besides www.cytopia.org , use a distributor. This means that besides the labels shops must also pay the distributor. And by charging a large "handling fee" they manage to keep the difference for themselves (as far as i am aware).
Cytopia.org keeps low prices because its psytrance specialized and also because it does not use a distributor (the scene is not that large to require a distributor for.. file transfers). We also try to keep the prices as low as labels allow us.
Now for the music selection on Cytopia we are not fully responsible. Cytopia started back in 2003 and its the first and only really independent psytrance download shop. It was a 0 budget project made out of really hard work and our little savings. We created the project to give something back to the scene for all that it offered us (countless parties and unforgettable experiences!). We really Love what we are doing here and try to give us much as possible to the people and labels (e.g. full track previews, low prices and big percentages for labels). I do not want to be too mellow here but that is the truth!
We have managed to get 30 labels so far on our catalogue and about 1,200 tracks. Including some historic ones like Iboga and Avatar Records. We are also expanding our label list... we are now working with Psytropic Records (check new PsyNina album and soon the new Miraculix album). We are also in talks with TIP, YSE, Harmonia (Wizzy Noise) and others. All labels working with us are extremely happy (Iboga is much over 1,000 buys).
Getting labels onboard though has not been easy! We have contacted all big labels and we welcome all of them to release with us. We understand that most labels are under-resourced, some luck the technical skill to upload tracks and some used to be very septic on digital distribution. The more time passes though the more labels see the potential and come to us to release their tracks. If there was a way people could help us get the the message through to the labels it would be great... and we could get an even greater service going for everyones' advantage! Any ideas welcome..
I hope i gave you a better insight on how things work..
All the best to everyone!
Love and Light,
Alex

and vinyls is still there, less in psychedelic trance but other electronic music styles where scratching appears like drum'n base, ragga, hip hop, and even non scratching like tech house etc is still mostly vinyl imo...
