^yeah, makes sense. But maybe there can be a few small stores that do sell these cd's. I mean if you go up the mountain side, there are a couple of stores up in old manali that sell some good stuff (orignal). It maynot be the latest dark va release, but certainly something you might not find somewhere else in india.
Imagine having one or 2 stoes in each city.. im sure there are enough people who listen to psy by now in most cities like bagalore or mumbai, and im also sure some of these listeners will end up buying music.

and oh.. btw, Planet M is now sold to Next (videocon) and is hardly gonna be selling music anymore. They are gonna be renamed to 'hello' (i think), and will be selling cell phones, laptop, and gaming consoles.

sure they can be small stores that sell psy, but how many stores would even know what psytrance is before they ordered cd stocks? and how would they know which cds to order in a market flooded with so many releases - many of them being so crappy as well. and the idea of choosing releases by trial & error is just impossible, the store would suffer HUGE losses if they offered a wide variety of psytrance.. hence, if we are expecting a store that sells quality music and the 'right' music, it would have to be one opened by someone with sufficient know how about this music(hehe and anyone with sufficient knowledge about this industry would probably never introduce psy onto a city's market through their own store )... as far as listeners ending up buying enough music to convince shops to continue selling psy? definitely not bro...come on, when the world has the choice of having cds being delivered to the doorstep, less than 1/100th of the listeners end up ordering music. most people would rather sit at home and download album after album instead of walking across the street and picking up a cd...i still don't feel this idea is feasible in India atleast. Such stores do exist in Japan since the market is a lot bigger (Japan happens to account for about 60% of worldwide sales of psytrance cds). hope your getting where im coming from

Okay agreed zman. Maybe such a store has to be opened by someone who is already a part of/aware of this scene. Maybe one or two record labels can take the initiative. Maybe a Japanese' store can open down here. or maybe there can be hard core promotion involved for an Indian store to make people aware or maybe it can occupy a small counter in an existing store... believe me, there is a lot more to the store's success than just buying and selling music cd's. No store (especially something as big s Planet M) will survive solely on sales of CDs irrespective of the genre of music being sold. Infact the amount they would make on cd's would go as rent for the place they have the store in. Hence, There can be clothing, consoles, headphones, dvd's, games etc sold and even keep a small cafe to add to it! But then again, I am talking like those kids who talk about being in the movies or driving in a limo about this scene... I don't have the time nor the money to put something up like this. But think about it, the sale for the labels would always be more or less the same because those who buy, would buy. Those who download, will download. and those who aren't aware, wont be aware. But imagine someone who isnt into psy walking into a store, looking at the cover of a CD and buying the cd out of kicks, or total impulse or because they liked the cover or better still with the help of the sales person... now thats a thought.           Nothing is said that has not been said before.

hmmm... heres the truth

1. Its not hard to get a psychedelic trance release on the shelves of Planet M, Music World etc. You just have to find a regional distributor who will distribute your cd to these shops. There are many of these distributors available for each region.

2. Convincing your regional distributor, is not that hard provided your cd is gonna sell a certain number of copies per month to earn its shelf space. Generally its easier to convince your local distrib if the label has a bunch of releases under its belt.

3. Another reason you dont see too many psy cd's is that, to supply all the major music stores around india. You would need a minimum of around 3000 copies in hand which is thrice of what you need for the world market. No small label is willing to invest in so many cd's for a small market like India with no guarantee on sales.

4. The reason you see some psy cd's in the music stores here is because the Label has a distribution contract with Sony Music or HMV for distribution in India or worldwide, so all their titles will be available or select titles that Sony or HMV choose from their catalog will be made available.

4. On a more positive note i would say, there definitely is a good market for psy in india just because of the sheer size of the country. There are enough curious people, newbies, old timers etc etc who go to music stores to buy music and would pick up a psy cd if the variety was offered to him and the prices were competitive like 250 - 300 rs a cd.

If you had a label, my advice would be to wait till you had enough releases under your belt. Atleast four or five and then push for the indian market. As over here the freshness of the music is not important, as the target market is not the die hard psy freak but the masses. The die hard would have already bought the cd or downloaded it before you could put it out all over the country.

My two cents

PS - The guys who make the most money selling Psy cd's are those local blokes making cheap fake copies and selling them in stalls all over goa.If some one could get them to sell the original stuff. The label and them could make a killing!

@Zman stop believing that jazz about the japanese market, it crashed ages back.

Completely agree with shiv

secondly opening a "small" store to try and sell psy in Bombay is impossible ......no label would be able to afford that .....800-1000 rs a squarefoot man ....deposits ....overheads etc .....

Cubasing is like Freebasing, just with audio.
Both cost more than you can afford, and leaves you sitting in a dark room with no life, craving for more.

This was in my local newspaper last weekend with a big pic of Vectro behind the decks with a caption saying israeli psy god Rasta blasta at a party in an undisclosed location in B'lore.

Psy-fever hits desi music scene with fervour

By Debarun Borthakur

Spearheading a musical revolution is a brigade of musicians armed with energetic bass beats and repetitive synthesiser phrases. Commonly referred to as "psy-Gods"(Psycehedelic-Gods), their music is far from the commercial market, but represents the so-called "underground" music scene in our country.

Coined in the early 60s, the term "underground" brackets a spectrum of musical genres including psychedelic trance, house, various sub-genres of EDM (electronic dance music) and jungle to name a few. However, out of these, psychedelic trance (psy-trance) is making news amongst music lovers. Patronised by the likes of Paul Van Dyk, Paul Okenfold, Skazi, Goagil Above & Beyond, Robert Miles, psy-trance in recent times has acquired immense popularity amongst new-age sound seekers.

India in recent years has witnessed many international missionaries of psy-trance. From GoaGil, Paul Okenfold, Skazi to Infected Mushrooms, India has played host to a number of "psy-Gods" from different corners of the world. Other than entertaining Indian psy-heads, these international acts have given a new meaning to the club culture of our country, and has contributed to the rise of the "psy-night" concept. Following the footsteps of their international counter-parts, Indian DJs and various associations of electronic musicians too have accepted psy-trances global appeal, and are doing their best to give Indian psy-trance a distinctive identity on the global market. One such invention is Goa trance. Made popular by the likes of artistes including Infected Mushrooms, Man Without A Face and Juno Reactor, Goa trance today is the most preferred genre of music in Israel, South Africa and Brazil.

The Internet has always played an important role in popularisation of psychedelic music. As it is categorised under "underground" music, one hardly gets to buy psy-trance compilations in music stores, and this is where the Internet comes into play.

right on shivamoon!

Have picked up a good amount of music in Indian stores... PlanetM/Musicworld

some...

- Goa Gil - Forest of the saints, Karmageddon, Worldbridger
- Nimba - Elements
- VA - Cafe Goa
- VA - Retrodelic Vibes 2
- Reflex - Guide by Time
- Astrix - Eye to Eye
- Infected Mushroom - CV
- 80% of the Com.pact catalogue (reprinted)
- Missing Piece 1 & 2 (From Shalom)
- DaDa Music Releases (not in stores anymore ... why??)
- Some Goa stuff ... Chi Ad, Asia 2001 ...
- Tons of Asian Massive & Hindustani Classical
- Some oldschool trance & techno
- Lots of crappy electronica CDs just because they were there

I believe the Indian market works if you're ready to tackle it. If you can print that 3000 it'll pay off in a few years... the good thing about the music scenario here is that there's no shelf life yet... heck! it's probably the only place in the world where people are still buying cassettes... so Astrix is definitely going to be as new today as it was in 2002. It's a massive market if its approached correctly... problem is that noones bothered to... and the few who started never followed through.

What the country needs is a good distributor just for electronic music. Labels in India are significantly smaller than established labels abroad so if everyones a subgenre label trying to promote their own brand nones going to make a dent.

PS...don't think a psy-only shop will work in India. (margins are too small unless printed locally)
PS2... forget the psytrance community, too many kids with IPods and Hi-speed internet.
PS3... If all else fails just go digital... a clean website with flac downloads. Will push it as far it can go these days.
