please, bring Talpa!
Computer games don't affect kids - I mean, if Pacman affected us as kids, we'd all be running around in darkened rooms, munching magic pills and listening to repetitive electronic music. :D :D |

@goaren: Portugal is very little but very diferent from place to place, so lots of diferent places to see
Up to the north you can see the beautiful cities of Porto and Guimarães.
Going down: Coimbra, Óbidos, Lisbon, Évora, Lagos, Tavira are cities with it's own beauty.
Nature-wise you can visit the mountains: Serra da Estrela (just above the Boom site) and the Natural Area of Gerês in the north.
The Alentejo coast is very nice too (from Lisbon to Algarve) with beautiful beaches and pitoresque villages.
In the south, lots of beaches, I suggest Lagos at west or the east side of the southern coast to visit the less commercialized areas.
I hope you have a great time

Hi goaren,
From Idanha-a-Nova to Porto you have 305 km and 262 km to LIsbon. If you want beaches, I sugest that you bypass the cities and go either to the Algarve, or to Alentejo. Lagos and is a very nice place, but it can be very windy. I would stay in a nice quieter area around Lagos (Salema for instance) and would leave Lagos for the night, nice restaurants and lots of bars. But it can be very crowded. If you do not want to take chances with the weather (the wind can ruin a perfect day at the beach for you), go for the eastern part of the Algarve. Manta Rota is a nice option. A small village with very nice beaches. No wind and the water is warmer. You can also stay in Tavira (but you have to take a ferry to the beach), or in Vila Real de Santo António. Just do not choose Monte Gordo (too confusing). However, in this part of the Algarve you don't have many options to go out at night. I don't mention Albufeira or Vilamoure because they're too crowded.
Another option is to go to the west coast of Algarve/Alentejo. A more laidback atmosphere, with lots of people in caravans travelling from beach to beach in search of waves (lots of surfers here). No high rises and big hotels here. Nice spots are Zambujeira do Mar, Odeceixe, and Aljezur (Arrifana beach, Monte Clérigo, Amado and others). Sea water here can be slightly cold.
If you choose Lisbon, besides of the city, you also have some beaches nearby. But if you really wants sun and sea, don't look for it here. Go to Lisbon if yo want to visit the city. Nice hostels to choose from.
If you choose Porto (very nice hostels too), I would suggest that you spend a couple of day visiting the city and enjoying the night life, and then head 100 km north to Gêres. The only national park in Portugal with beautiful mountain landscapes. It is warm in the summer, so you can go for a swim in beautiful lakes and waterfalls. Good place also for hiking. Just search "Gêres" in google for images. You can look for accomodation here: http://www.adere-pg.pt/index.php?lang=EN-us
Let me know what you decide... |

the western coast below Lisbon (coast of Alentejo) has some sweet beaches and is calm and beautiful. Good beaches and villages: Porto Corvo, Zambujeira do Mar, Odeceixe.
If you go down that coast you reach the south (Algarve) and can explore the hotter southern coast. Good places: Lagos and nearby beaches, Tavira and lots of nices beaches from Tavira to the Spanish border (Cabanas, Cacela Velha).
Have fun!
