wow, so full on on this thread..........
i have to say that i agree (to a certain extent) with scandalist, at least about KODE iV. althogh never having seen him this is only based on what i've read here...........

yeah trainwrecking sucks, there really is nothing like it and "names" get away with it a lot. Max from Etnica, Raja Ram to name a couple. I'm certainly not saying that its OK, its SOOOOOOOO not cool and really does spoil the atmosphere.

However, the "job" of a DJ is to take the party ppls on a bit of journey, make them think etc........right? now i reckon Gil, with his reputed 12hr sets can do this and maybe just djs in a different style. It is possible to DJ without beat mixing, the vibe is just different. Also people have been DJ ing with DAts for time, doesn't Dimitri (TIP) dj off of DATS?

Penta, Ghreg on Earth, Random and Chromatone, all from the San Francisco area, and Jirah, from the Seattle area I believe, all rock!!!

Some really great music coming from these guys. All have different sounds, energies and influences... but all are full-on hard-core boot-stomping, dance till you drop rockin' great music.

Dj I say Goa Gil and Kode IV mixing and track selection is not the best but they
make people move and have great presence
and they are international Djs not just local

hey scandalist I was actually replying to this guy, not to you, sorry for not clarifying that.
I have to agree with both of you that Goa Gil isn't the most talented or artisitic DJ in the world, But like Krod was saying he is invited to the biggest parties and festivals in the world, and people generally go bananas when he is playing, so I think he must be doing something right. Although, you would think that with how long he has been spinning, he must have had the time and opportunities to improve (DAT or no DAT).
I saw Dimitri play at the last fusion fest and his mixes are just flawless. Hard for me to believe that he uses DAT's also.           Both teams played hard

Dimitri uses both CDs and vinyl. I remember reading an interview with him where he made some statement that "vinyl is for DJs and CDs are more for collectors", but when I saw him play, he was using pretty much all CDs.

But Dimitri is not a US DJ, so to keep this on topic....

My current favorite producer from the states is Jirah from Seattle (already mentioned). The guy's music is simply amazing...hopefully we will be seeing some releases from him in the future.

Favorite DJs....uh....there are a lot. Just go to Texas sometime and you will hear some of the best.

...probably because juno reactor is not american.

my fave american dj's would include...

trevor wyse (la)
dutch (sf)
derby (chicago)
wild bill (dc, but i think he moved)
gavin (nyc)
moksa (athens ga)
alex (tennessee)
kri (asheville nc)

i know there are a lot more great dj's here in the states, this is just a small list of the people that i have had a chance to hear first hand. flawless mixing, great track selections, and mucho technical ability.

ps: if i could vote for myself, i would...

The fractal cowboys from san francisco are some of the most psychedelic dj's in the county. i think they play lots of original stuff, and mix other stuff. The were my favorite at burning man this year. And at the solstice party in the afternoon, they had a good feel for whacky trance, like psykovsky. Definately one of the more tripped out artistists in the states.

I also strongly suggest Nuclear Ramjet from Canada. Their music is great, they are not just dj's but very tallented producers. Check out their site www.nuclearramjet.com for mp3 tracks. They have tracks out on ZMA, Hadshot, AP rec. Hom-mega, Turbo Trance, Iboga and other labels. They also have two albums out their own label ascend recordings.

Gil has lived in the States and in Goa on and off since the 70s. During the very early 80s he was part of the scene and helped to develop the music which today we know of as Goa Trance.

His ideas regarding the music and the scene and his contributions to both are deserving of respect regardless of people's opinions of his DJing abilities. This is why he still has a following and always will.

Trevor and Kiva from GreenSector
Malice and Barakuda from PsyTribe
Kode IV
Biodegradable
Quadra

For a party in dry, hot Portugal, IndiaDrop seems perfect. Ofer from Galactica records I think. Big talent, huge potential.

producers

Penta (Nikita) is hands down the best psy producer the States have to offer right now. He is from Russia but has spent half his life here, so I think he counts as being from the US.

Phosphene (Ghreg on Earth) is great too.

I'm definitely digging Deeper in Zen more these days and I hear Biodegradable has some good new stuff (though I have not actually HEARD it).

DJs

Goa Gil for his marathon sets (he always outlasts anybody's trip).

Ghreg on Earth is my favorite SF dj.

And I can't think of anybody else right now.
