Some tips I have learned:

1. Don't play too LOUD!
If your audience have to raise their voice *at all* to talk in a chillout room - it's WAY TOO LOUD. Period. Watch peoples mouths and body-language when they talk with each other...if they are leaning close to speak to each other... or cupping hand-to-mouth : TURN IT DOWN! and then some.

2. Don't push mixes TOO FAR if you don't know
how to. It would be better to hear a nice set of good songs with brief "soft" mixes, or no mixing, ... than to hear akward clashes.

3. Love the music, listen to it and practice mixing..or making sets that fit together EVERYDAY. It's Ok to play stuff that YOU LIKE , even if it's older or from a different genre than what you see posted or for sale on ambient sites. It's ok to play Pink Floyd, acoustic guitar, African soul vocals or trippy Talk Radio samples ,etc.

4. Try to pick songs that 'fit together' and make a flow. If you get nervous, just close your eyes, and imagine paradise or the most amazing chilled-high feeling you ever felt...and just 'channel' that vibe into your set. Let people feel the cool breeze and soft white sand under their feet.

5. Quality over Quantity. Concentrate on only buying or REALLY GOOD CDs and learning them very well. It's much better to have 20 all-killer CDs from artist you love and know, than to have 200 discs of
downloaded crap - that you don't really listen to or know anything about. if you're not sure a CD is a killer, don't buy it or put it in your case.

6. Be PRofessional and ORganized. Keep the written track listing of each disc with it always! It can tell you a lot about the atmosphere and vibe the artist tried to make with the song. "Sunrise on the Ganges (flute mix)" tells you a lot more than trying to remember "number 6 was the one, i think"!

7. Play a gig for a few friends at your house, or at a small house party. Tune in to the ambience
and energy of your friends - and make your selections based on how they react.

8. Find a local cafe that isin't super busy, tell them you're a dj, and ask if you can have a free "Ambient night" there on a weeknight. Make some flyers, and start off mellow and play stuff that won't scare the owner/staff or existing clients. Invite all your friends - post it on local networks - hand out flyers and see who you can draw out.

thanks all.. all these tips are very good

about the cds.. dont worry, I buy my cds, no downloaded chill cds in my case.. I preffer, as brett said, buying just a few of the very good ones than having thousands of downloaded music..
and this way, it is also good because I know all my cds very well =)

Im still trying to find some equipment, but for now I practice at a friends house, and when I get good enough I start going to bars and cafes to ask if I can dj there

thanks again guys!

Hey there sherlockalien,

I just started chill-DJing last summer. I don't have decks of my own either (I visit a friend when I want to practice) and admittedly I'm no wizard of technical skills, but more often than not what I hear from party promoters and other chill DJs is just like Brett From Tibet says - if you can focus on the overall flow, your turntablism skills are not as important. I do mostly soft mixes myself and the feedback I always get relates to how well the music flows, not whether this one was mixed well into that one.

Another tip a fellow chill DJ gave me was to always have 2 to 3 times as much music ready to play as you think you'll need, if that's possible. Chill areas are still often an after-thought (a true crime IMHO) and if a DJ doesn't show up, or if the flow feels right, you may very well be asked to play for longer than you had planned. Last summer some of my first gigs were like this, when I started at 6am as the sun came up and by 9:30am the other DJs were just waking up so I was still playing. Thank goodness for knowing your music and having enough to spread it out!

It's tempting to put together structured setlists, with timecodes for when things should be mixed in or out, but having the mastery to "wing it" when it's called for is so important. It helps you learn your music better too.

Good luck! And remember to stay relaxed. That's what it's all about anyway, right?           Relentlessly pursuing quality chillout. It can be a full time venture.

being a chillout dj is not something you do - in most cases it is something that happens to you.

to become a chill dj. it's not that difficult has it isn't to become a dj of anything else, as long as you have the records of the style you want to spinn, and some skils also... but to get recognition, and respect from the real community of the music people wich you are into you must love what you play as a listener and also as a dj. for me that's crutial and as a result you will have your own style and your mixes will be very personalised and people will know that is you behind the decks!
