I was wondering if/how you could synch ableton to some cdjs/whatever is being played out of the mixer. I want to be able to beatmatch what is playing on the cd decks with what I'm playing on Ableton. Is this possible? If so, how is it done? If anyone has done this, how well does it work? Thanks!
I want to test it out with some chill music first (overlaying loops/samples into tracks), then try something with psytrance (play a set with more than 2 decks basically). |

Timewarp your tracks in Live! and then just TAP ableton to the tempo of your decks.. Be sure u set shortcut on keyboard for taping cause its lot better to tap with keys than with mouse..
This is really funny question since I wanted to ask how to beatmatch turntables to the ableton and I didnt knew the answer till now..
So thanks for the answer

Since I'm not at home to try this out right now and I haven't tried it before, do you have to tap the button on each downbeat or does it do it for you?

there are 2 little arrows on your bottom left on the wave view...view, kinda like a nudge tool, if you know your bpm on the cdj, you set it up and nudge it until it fits nicely...
iono, i never tried it, but i think it works =p

Someone else told me to do this cause they said TAP is crap. I'll just have to try it out and see what works. Thanks!

Sync it with midi ( if you got midi in on your mixer)

If you don't have midi on your Cdjs or mixer (rarely have, at least the accesible ones), the problem you will have for sure is pushing play and stop (cue) one hundred times until you get the beat match right... even when BPM is the same... I've had the same problem when trying to start my live set beatmatching with a Dj... so I usually have to stop until the end of the last song of the Dj set, because Ableton Live does not have a Pitch Bend button, like CDjs do... This guy Gustavo Bravetti, who makes minimal, developed a pitch bend for Live... but it only works on PCs and you have to install some program I dont know much about... you can read about it in this interview:
http://createdigitalmusic.com/2007/09/21/interview-gustavo-bravetti-playing-music-with-light-and-interactive-gloves/
Fair enough. Tell me about Pushandpull–how did you make it? What inspired it?
I created Pushandpull to encourage a friend to use Live in his DJ sets. I’d had the idea running around in my head but when a friend told me that he won’t use Live just because he loves to play with vinyl, and it was too hard for him to beat-match from vinyl to Live, I decided to program Pushandpull.
Pushandpull makes it easier to beat-match Live with an external music source.Pushandpull does to Live’s master TEMPO, what we do to a turntable’s RPM when we slightly push or pull the vinyl.
With Pushandpull you can use two keys/buttons to temporary nudge Live’s master TEMPO by +-5% (gradually) from the actual tempo, like the + and – “pitchbend” buttons on any standard CDJ, also it allows you to change Live’s master TEMPO in little steps to do fine adjustments, using another two keys/buttons.
I programmed Pushandpull using Synthmaker by Outsim. Synthmaker is a great developer tool for audio/MIDI related applications. The workflow is like in Reaktor but you can compile your work to a VST or a stand alone .exe, plus you have many elements to give a professional look to your application without the needs to type any code or deal with compilers etc. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t type some code in there!
After testing it with success, I decided to create the Smartextensions company and then release Pushandpull for free through Smartextensions for Live’s users.
Today almost all my live performance is generated in Live so I use Pushandpull mostly to interact with other DJs.

Doesnt the newest version of live have a nudge feature right next to the tempo? I've synced two computers both playing live this way, why not a cdj? |

I was looking for a way to have it done automatically by the program. I wanted to run a 3 deck set (2 actual decks and 1 track from the computer), and only have to worry about beatmatching the 2 decks, otherwise i'd just use 3 decks.

Have you considered using Traktor? You can mix with 4 decks..

the best way is with midi in/out on you mixer, that way its all synced with the bpm and to get them in beat u just have to bend it with the wheel or with the nudge in ableton
