Hi, like a lot of ppl here I'm trying to archive a great bass. I think I'm doing ok, but I have a question.
Everybody keeps saying that the bass should be sounding as good as possible raw before starting to processing it. Well, my question is - how good can it get? I uploaded a sample of one of my basslines with and without processing. I would like comments on both the processed and unprocessed sample.

This can also be used to show the complete noobs just how important processing is I guess.

to the point you dont need anything on it.

all the process change the actual wavform and the dynamics but you can achieve all this from synth / sample too , and sometimes simply not... and then process can help to tune it.

alot of my basses are simply saw wav and all the charechter comes from EQ so in that case process is creative part and not 'mix' part so i would say for creative purpose its ok to use anything but for mixing make sure its allready in the right place since the begining.

sometimes the key note or octave can just make all the change u need and no eq can do that.

imo psytrance bass the secret s in the envelope and the octava u choose

first choose the wave in the oscilator in the right octave.... the one with enough low freq but not many junk low freq....

secondly u ll need to put a filter in the envelope and the configuration of it will totaly depent of ur track..... but bass without envelope filter usualy wont work...

ow and another important thing s to RETRIGGER The oscilator if it has this option.....

and if u are usin more than 2 oscilators pay atention if they are well balanced and if the second oscilator s realy needed...

and u are gonna be able to get a kick ass bass without eq or nothing of those things...

the processed one sounds muddy on my phones playing the file in traktor. the no fx one sounds a bit high in pitch but much better to me.

better do the original on lower notes instead of trying to compensate the lack of low with fx.
and if the lower notes do not sound well with the synth settings you have now, you start all over.

I asked about comments on MY bassline, not about links to bassline topics that I allready read.
Everytime ppl see a topic about bass, they just link to the mother of all bass instead of reading the topic. I've allready read the mother of all bassline and all the other bassline topics, and YES I know how to use the search.
Thanks anyways.

I don't think u get character from eq,eq just cleans your bass. You get the character from the envelopes and cuttoff positioning and different spacing between each note ,also try using elyvanta widerboy on the midfreqs for sum nice narrow fattening. it's importaint where you compressors are in the chain. Rcomp for sum fat attack then samplitudes philbia for sum preamplifier action another compressor needed to tame the heavy wieght of the preamp. Then i deploy samplitudes Pulse which is a transiant modulator I can then sharpen or lessen
the attck and sustain even more of the bass. (eq is deployed each time I alter the dynamics) then one
more compressor if needed.

Before all of that processing I make sure the bass is sounding as good as I can get it, right amount of click and movement in the envelopes, velocity, phase degree.
Is daunting because I know the journy ain't over these are just my evolutions to a better sounds.

I think the answer to the question is that the character of bass comes from your own processing and where things start and finish in the chain because yes how far can u acually go with just a synth to make a bass sound like your own?mod matrix routing, velocity, envelopes are limited, processing is not

weren't happy with it,sounds really metalic like if it's sound genrators are made from metal rather from pure rubber,to digital sounding and harsh to much eq involved.I'm sure in advanced hands it can be made to sound good with sumone that has more evolved "processing" than mine I'd give tau pro 6/10 for sound quality. I'd try pentagon, sylenth, audio realism. Even the subtractor lol from reason is okish. any synth is good if it has retrigger ,clean sounding filters (moogish)
