A big balls bass line will always get my shit rocking, but...
I want to hear the melody jamming with the bassline. I like hearing a bassline that actually sounds like a bass line, with the melody flying around it in harmony.
Best example I have is Eraser v Yojalka. Those cats know how to play a phat bass and have melodies that compliment.
Melody or bassline? Gimme melody AND bassline please.

Well, I guess it's everything as long as it is combined nicely...
But psytrance is a typical "european" music in a way that the rythm isn't really important but the stuff that happens in the upper frequencies (melodies and stuff).
But the rythm is very important and I believe you could make more of it.

i quite don't agree with that importance attributed to the bassline. a bassline doesn't make psytrance "psytrance". the more the focus is laid on the bassline, the more plain-dance-music'ish it'll get.
i noticed that in most of the tunes i especially like a lot, the bassline is rather exchangeable (in tone and rhythm). it's just a foundation for the whole house...i don't care if it's made from iron or granite, as long as it holds the building, means fits the tune.
also, i noticed that, the more complex the bassline is, the less complex is the rest, as a lot of tracks seem to be built up on the bass, only evolving around it, and every other element rather sounds like an extension of it. tracks with melodic bassline that fits the tune but doesn't serve as bedrock for the other elements are pretty rare in my opinion.
and to stay ontopic, i agree with the people saying that everything can screw up a track. its the final picture in the end that matters!

actualy in european music, at least these days, its the rhythm that is important, as evidant in the popularity of prog and tech in europe.

A single piece of the whole puzzle that stands out doesn't make the track good. Everything needs to be done "right"..at least for me |
