Moog Minitaur. I'm not a huge fan of the Moog sound in general, I've owner a few "bass" synths but this is the only still in my house. price is great, easy to use and with some good fx pedals I get monstrous bass.'

You can also look at MeeBlip Anode, digital monophonic bass synth with analog filter, cheaper than a Volca...

Not had a chance to check the Minitaur, but I did play with the Volca Bass, and for the price its a steal, I think if u looking for a bass only synth then its a very good option indeed,
the only feature I missed in it was audio input but you wouldn't need that if u use a bass synth
Its the best of the volcas for me and its got a great filter

piano roll would work as input for any of the volcas. sync would be dependant on latency of the midi/soundcard.

does the sub phatty allow you to reset initial phase, like the minitaur? |

I've got a volca bass laying around and it can do the job for a bass synth, but on a rendered track you'd need a bit of sampling because the oscillators do wander around a lot, which are "auto-tuned" in real-time (so, it can bring in some phase issues without sampling it).
Also, the filter envelope does leave a lot to desire, it's not as precise as one would like it to be (or used to, with a TB), but maybe in a couple of years this could turn out to be the "volca-sound" Appending on this, the amp env and filter env are tightly coupled, with only a few options to define how they interact, so it can be abit cumbersome to get, again, precision
About DAW sync, its a breeze.. I've got a midi out from my soundcard to the volca, and spit out time sync from the PC soundcard into the volca -> the volca automatically picks up the MIDI messages and synchronized accordingly (rendering the "tempo" knob in the volca useless in this setup..). In this case I feed the volca into my mixer, and then route the send to go back in the soundcard, so latency-wise I have to consider the whole time of the midi going out, then of the sound coming in. (In Ableton at least) You can define this straight at the midi tempo sync settings (ctrl+m -> auto settings), so effectively the PC is spitting out the tempo messages with an exact tempo delay (or anticipated in this case ) -> so when the audio hit's my soundcard, it's perfectly in sync
But, IMO the volca doesn't shine as a bass synth, as it does as 303 machine (and, in this case, it's not that good when compared to a TB or a x0xb0x unfortunately, but the price is unbeatable), and even then it's a bit hard to make it cooperate like all the other 303's with distortion units. Nevertheless, you can get some killer leads / huge rhythms / great effects from this little monster, and a couple of good basses

i would save the cash instead of going for a cheeper synth that youll end up regret getting ,,,,, ( not slagging of the volcas....for wht it is not a bad thing)
it always worth the wait... no matter how long it is..
