i do everything with headphones but this is case of practice (i work many years with headphones) and i have more troubles with work on monitors now
matter of habit.
but i think its better to work with headphones in this case where room acoustic is bad.
i remember my room when i was a kid: ~3dB and more between (some) bass notes           http://www.beatport.com/release/cross-the-atoms/1042450

Me neither, I use headphones sometimes to check on higher frequencies (1000hz and up) but they just don't translate accurately enough in the low end or even low mids...

i use only headphones b/c thats all i have. I dont recommend it. everytime i listen to my stuff on big speakers it sounds inferior. i go to my friends house who has monitors and pa system in a semi-treated room. AN ENTIRE DIMENSION OF DIFFERENCE. especially in the low end.

i guess maybe if you have headphones you have listened to for years and years and your ears know them etc etc maybe you can get something good but idk. all my money now is going into monitor fund. but then my bank charged me an overdraft fee. and i didnt look at my account online for over a month b/c i moved to a new country, and i had accumulated over $400 in fees. so a few more months til monitors           --

Imo, headphones don't work very well for bass. Low frequencies need space to develop and your headphones are close to your ears.

@OP

That happens quite a lot. It's probably either the filter cutoff, filter env ammount or filter env ADSR (or the lack of cutoff following note as someone mentioned). Play arround with those. One thing I learned is never make a bass patch with single note x 3 bassline, since it will suck when you change the notes afterwards.

Start with the pattern you want and tweak the bass from there. Hope it helped

I asked the same question years ago... guess who replied on page 2 gold info there:

How about if you want to get higher notes, use a sub bass, just a basic sine with some boosted low end, should give the higher notes some power.

thats very true cause the rooms color too muhc the sound even treated one. i make as good or better kick bass in my headphones than on bm6a adam or focal.. i know big psy producers that does the same too ,or always check it on headphone; the thing is to have a decent headphone.
i m gonna get the hd800 i would not be suprised if it s smoke my monitors for lot of things , probably even more detailed and analitic than adam in the mids and highs and offcourse the bass .

http://forum.isratrance.com/sennheiser-hd650-vs-hd600/

just an old thread about this, i accidntly stumbled across whilst searchin for sumthin else few day back.
aeon mentions sumthing quite related to this thread, that sennihizers can be closly more acurate than your monitoring if un treated. the low end is so clean that u can get a true result. its ancient but well worth a read .

i was proud to be apart of that thread.. good descriptions here, the conversations kinda vered off what ones was best, but more to the quality of 650. if ur budget iant gud get these. the sound you get is amense and the comfort is indescribable

imo it s easier and faster to archieve great production by learning one or two GOOD headphone than using monitors but headphone are a bit a pain to use... but once you re used to how it translate it s very powerfull. guys like me who used monitors for years it s hard to think it s possible...but i would have used a good headphone for same amount of time i bet my production would be better ,as i spent half that time fighting rooms acoutics and it s really what set the bar of the production once you re experienced.
i love to tweak/make source in my headphones i hear every little details , i love to use them for equing too ,processing...it always translate great on my monitors.. but it s not really one vs the other, it s using both at what they do great in tandem , in headphone it s easier to make big mixing mistake that dont hapen on monitors,it need a bit of training and to a/b a lot , probably cause i m way more used to monitors .

imo headphone is the futur in electronic production but it s maybe not there yet ,dunno i never tried a highend headphone ..(but the guy who recomend me ath 50 he mix since long time , he mixed in lot of great studio..he play in clubs every weekend all around the globe, he know what he is talking about saying he get good translation)

avantage are cheaper price ,you can make music everywhere... no need expensive monitors and to treat the room and you can get same quality sound with training
