Artists changing their names

I was curious why artists chose one name as an artists/dj, then change it and produce/dj under another? Some off the top of my head: Androcell/Distant system, Arahat/Monks of Madness. I was curious to know why they do this? I don't see such a drastic change in their sounds that would necessitate the change. Seems like they would lose out on the casual fan base (or even some more die hard fans who just missed the memo). Not saying that they should try to create a huge following, but when I like the style of an artists, I enjoy most of their stuff, this name changing can make it difficult to follow their work.

well, the case of tom (arahat) it's not a name change per se... MoM is a joint project between him and Bodhi...

but normally a name would denote either a change in style or a change in members....

ok, yeah I knew arahat was joining up with some, but to be honest I liked their conglomoration names the west coasters used arabli (mubali and arahat) mubodhi (mubali and bodhi)

I assumed it was due to a change in style.           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

There was once a time where it didn't matter about whose name was on the track as long as it was good. It was kinda fun to find out that the track by "beast" was actually a track by Hallucinogen. There used to be some artists that released every track under a different name, but you could still hear what made that person that person and easily tell that so and so made this track.

Also the reason behind Arabali and Mubodhi was partially because most of my collaborations were always "X vs. Mubali" or Mubali meets X" and that's fine for a one off type of collaboration, but Tom, Bodhi and I all wanted to make semi permanent projects out of it and show that it's less of a random encounter and more of a calculated conjunction of twisted minds. By the way, when all 3 of us work together, we're called "Brains"

Now here's where things get interesting... If someone were to read the tracklisting on the cds that they purchased, they'd notice that some of the names in the credits are the same... That's how you'd know who's who... If you don't have the original artwork, you wouldn't really know.

Now there's groups that have a group name and then the artists have their own side project. Rastaliens and Braincell, Megolopsy and Frantic Noise, Osom Kindzadza and Psykovsky, etc... How do we know who these projects are? By reading...

In the end, it doesn't matter what your name is, if you like the music, you like it no matter who does it.           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

the more one gives importance to the name the more comfortable u get with ur work...and tat blocks the creative flow. Be uncomfortable n go in different directions and come out with some groundbreaking work. Never be satisfied.           www.vantaravichitra.com

i dunno personly i have 3 solo projects each one tiny diffrent vibe but all under psytrance hat
also have 2 more projects with other guys
and could have 3-4 more but those we named VS due to finish our creativity on the sounds
never cared what people gonna think about it actualy
but i had some problems playing various styles under one alias..
but whats funny is , today those projects are getting closer to each other in the sound and idea's .... i think another alias might replace all one day.

I do not agree that name is not important. I think it reflects on the artist ant the music - and that is also why artists think of their name againg when they start creating music and not only mix other people stufff...

I agree that the music itself is what that matters but it doesnt mean everything else is bullshit...
