Artist for me is when you can come up with some original ideas and sounds better than the previous released music. Then it will be a nice live act because good music is coming from the speakers!

          Boom :)

but, artists also play music ?

Wtf ?

Im so confused :-P

Samurais where artists in regards to cutting peoples limbs off with their swords... but they dont play music as such..

Wtf ?

Can my brain possibly solve this puzzle....

Could it POSSIBLY be that people who specialize in creating music are actually just different from people who specialize in playing it ?

People who dont recognize djs as artist are just people who dont understand the art of djing.

Plain and simple.

Being able to produce music doesnt make you more an artist than being able to mix it and present it.
Everybody can make music, everybody can dj, the thing here is not everybody is equally good at it - for some, it becomes an art... as it does with cutting peoples arms and legs off with katana blades.

dont be confused.....

its a matter of semantics.....

if you are going to go in that direction.........then yes........i agree.........djing is an artform as well........

im not saying one is better than the other at all......

all i am saying is that an artist produces music.........and the dj plays it.........

and yes......anyone can produce "music" but once again.......semantics.......

even in the lineups they have the djsets section and artist section separated from one another....

respect

I was thinking the exact same thing, this is all semantics.

For my part, I try to say "Production Artists" and "DJ Artists".

On the flyers we use, its "Dj" and "Live", a concept also (rightfully) under attack in regards to "what is live?".

Im just getting tired of all this hierarchy crap.
Its like people dont have anything better to do than to put each other down or devalue whatever it is they are working with.

Lots of people think they have djing all figured out just because they scored some free mp3s and learned to beat match in traktor.

And everybody considers themselfes a true artist above all else just because they read some "mother of all basslines, leads whatever" thread on isratrance and now they can produce mainstream psy which is sooo original in its artistical content that it just resembles just about all the rest out there.

Then there are the TRUELY ORIGINAL PRODUCERS who are so incredibly original that they produce electro (which is just about the most mainstream thing you could do).

Its all the same in the end. Either we are all artists if we say so, or none of us is.

We can then leave it to the world to judge us on how good artists we are.

I dont really give a shit, I just want to play music, dance and have a good time - but being put down by people who dont know what the fuck they are babbling on about stops me in doing just that.

From now on, there will be NO TOLERANCE

i agree..........devaluing people is ugly......and i have a lot of respect for anyone who has deep 'passion' for music.......either as an artist,dj or listener..........

and you seem to be very passionate of music.....

And what is art ?

"# 8 Characteristics of art
* 8.1 Skill
* 8.2 Judgments of value
* 8.3 Communicating emotion
* 8.4 Creative impulse
* 8.5 Symbols"
+

"Art is an act of creation, when images and objects, sights and sounds, or drawings and carvings convey the beauty and splendor of the world, or realize the imagination of the artist, for the purpose of self-expression or the shared enjoyment of its creation. Art is that which elevates our interpretation of the world and of ourselves from simple description or narrative to the sublime."

Djing music is not art as such, BUT, creating a psychedelic DJ set which transcends the total sum of the tracks as produced by the production artists represent a creation in its own right.

You see, what you have is the tracks that you play, which you then arrange so that they underline each other and create a journey. Through that journey each track enhances the other, and the total effect of this is the creation of something more than there would have been, had a skilled psychedelic DJ not been choosing the journey.

Psychedelic Djing is an artform, because in its definition the djs set is to become more than the mechanical sum of randomly selected tracks. There is creation there, part of the djs persona and psychy goes into the dj set.

Thats just the way it is. Like I said, people just dont understand psychedelic djing.
