to auspexx:
apologie accepted

look, im not an anti label activist, and i dont think that all the labels are bad. and i must say that i didnt hear any bad things about compact to this day.

the whole purpose of my post was just to help the less experienced artist in their first steps. thats all.
i think that i'm making a good thing by sharing a bit of my experience to help new artists avoid the pitfalls i visited. so i want to apologize to you if the things i wrote insulted you in any way...

over and out

Thanks man, I wasn't insulted, and I too wrote the things I did because I believe they might contribute to young artists on their way to glory.

good luck to ye all,

"and when you sign a new artist ITS UP TO YOU TO EXPLAIN TO HIM WHAT HE SIGNS!!! because you're the more experienced side to the deal and because youre the one who wrote the agreement"

unfortunately, the goal of any business person is generally to stay within the law while (to their own benefit) screwing others out of money. even at a micro level, such as underground music, this holds true.

Thanks a bunch you guys for your helpful hints to the fledgling artist. It is a breath of fresh air to know that the other artist want to keep situations that they encountered from happening to other people. I am a newbie to the whole productions scene and it would be my dream of getting signed but I also am only making music for the sake of just that. I think that any industry has players in it that aren't always in it for the right reasons. This is true with anything that combines social functions with monetary compensation. It is very important to let people know what they need to do to protect themselves and their art. Party promoters can be indeed placed in the same category of record labels too, I have encountered situations where artists haven't gotten paid for their performances or other miscellaneous crap like that. Just remember that people are people and you will encounter ones that are genuine and in it for the music and others that are in it for themselves.

I also have a completely separate question that probably doesn't even belong in this topic, but I can't make a new post yet so...

When artist come out to do a live set, a majority of the ones I have seen don't really do it "live" Sure they will play their own music and have a whole bunch of gear on stage, but when you look behind the fascade, (or under the table) you find that they are just playing their stuff on laptops or DAT machines and sometimes the gear isn't really even hooked up. One live performance comes to mind where it looked like they were playing live, then the cd started skipping. This particular band was one of the ones that got me into the music and I was personally crushed to learn the truth of their "live" set. On the other hand, I saw Logic Bomb play live and their laptop kept crashing.... What did they do??? They started improvising their tracks on the fly with the gear they requested. It was so raw, spontaneous... One of the best live sets I have ever encountered!!! I am not meaning to turn this into a whine and complain session, just I want to point out that when you pay an exorbitant amount of money for a live act, you tend to expect a fully live performance. As a fledgling artist I don't want to do a live set untill I know that it would truly be live... Sorry for ranting, it's just one of things that has bugged me for a few years now...           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

hello,

i'd just like to say that i am a new, young artist just about taking my first steps into the scene (one contract signed so far, albeit one that frankly looks more like a show of good faith than having any real legal value hehe)...

and i have found Tal (Auspexx) to be extremely helpful and honest with me.... from the very first batch of demos i sent out , which werent even very good, he was the first guy from any label to bother replying with any encouragement, and since then he has listened to everything new that i've sent him, given me criticism/advice on all of them, and even sent me a bunch of com.pact releases for me to compare myself / be inspired by / etc...

i can safely state that this is not the behaviour of a cynical businessman looking only to screw gullible artists! imho this is the behaviour of a friendly person with geniune love for the music, interested in helping new talent even if (like me) it may be years before they are good enough to actually sell records and the style doesnt even really suit the label!

so i think there is no need to be mean. isnt it silly to criticise him for being secretive and witholding info from artists, after he just voluntarily posted some explanation and extra info for artists to the thread? seems a paradox to me.

anyway... this is not meant as a diss at anybody else either... thanks obviously also go to the original poster and all the artists contributing with their warnings and lessons from experience...

just remember... just because they are not an artist doesnt make someone in the scene shady and cynical...there are many people who cant write the music but run labels or websites, do deco and art, organise parties, and so on... and i'm sure most of them are doing it for the love of the scene the same as the artists

peace to all

btw i actually have a question

about invoices....

these are basically documents saying : "YOU OWE ME £500" , right? And you say the label must recieve one of these before they will pay the £500. Well, how does the artist know how much they are owed - this would be cd profit * royalty% * no of cds sold - right? and the artist doesnt know the profit per cd nor how many are sold, so how can they draw up an invoice?

i'm curious on this point if those in the know could elaborate i'd be grateful           http://www.dartrecordings.co.uk/

U got it all wrong.
The invoice is a formal paper (for tax use) , You give an invoice for the lable on the amount of money writen on the contract then you get the money from them and write them a receipt on the money they gave you.
Thats why you give Invoice before you get the money and not after.           www.trancelucent.com - www.themistedmuppet.com - www.electrosun.net

I think that the last person who needs to give advices on this topic is someone from COM.Pact rec.

I'll tel you why!

When we (eLeC3) begin to make music we have send tracks to few Labels, and one of them was com.pact, they liked our music and want to have a meeting...
It's important to sey that they want to have this meeting!!! (We arrenged it with GIDI, the owner of the label!)
They chenged the day several times, and when the day was set we took a day of from our job's and was redy to go.
The meeting suposed to be at 15 :00 in other city when we were on our way we called again to make shurethat the meeting will be but they sad "we cant talk right now we will call back" we waited an hour in nowere and then we called again, then he sad "look! we are buisy now, cant talk right now" and then he disconnect the call........
We never heard from them sings that day.
I didn't expected that kind of treet from this label.
and all the respect that was to you'r label is gone.

So i dont think anyone from this label can give advices to young artist's ! ! !

Juddje yourself.
