Artist payment for compilation appearance?

First off, I apologize if this is the wrong forum category for a question like this, but I thought it'd get the most attention from established labels and artists here...

I'm an experienced musician who has done a lot of things except for a compilation appearance on another label (or an album for that matter), and I recently sent demos of my latest psy track around to labels.

I've received some very good feedback, including a couple offers to appear on compilations (WOOHOO!!!) Needless to say I'm super psyched about the good response, but my question is...

Is it typical for a freshman artist to be paid any sort of advance for a trance compilation appearance? Some reports from this forum lead me to suspect "yes" but the licensing agreements I've received so far say "no".

For me it's definitely NOT all about money, and I'll sign an agreement no matter what to get my music out where people can listen to it, BUT it'd be nice to cover some expenses (like the cost of shipping CDs all over the globe hehe).

Now I'm certainly not going to mention names, and I realize this is an *extremely* sensitive topic, so please feel free to PM me with a response. Being somewhat new to the trance label arena, I really need to know what to expect and what not to - just to give me peace of mind, I'm sure you know what I mean

Thanks in advance - this forum rocks!

Well, I once had a track out on a compilation. The contract was very generous, and included an advance payment. I got payed half of the advance payment, and nothing else. When you choose a label, ask around how they treat new and relatively unkown artists. I hope that this stuff doesn't happen anymore, and that in the US no one would bluntly break a contract like that, but it's an option.           http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222

i say make sure you get an advance... in facts its all easier if you dont have to deal with possible royalties at some unspecified point in the future. you can use the cash NOW to build your studio etc. I just cant believe I've talked to some artists I -really- like and they've -never- actually been paid for any of their releases. That's fucked. Of course its not about the money and shouldn't be but its pure disrespect to take someone's art and then run with it...

not about the money? then please tell this in a shop! the music you make is your work, you 've spent time, energy to make the track, you spent money to build the studio, the artist HAS to be paid! otherwise i think it's disrespecting.           Procyon Records

When I said "not about the money" (not sure if basilisk is coming from the same place), I meant that money is not my primary reason for making music or for wanting to have it released.

BUT I completely agree with you Danger that artists need to be paid - for all the reasons you mentioned... also because doing so reduces the financial burden of artists such that they have the means to make even BETTER music, which in turn progresses the whole genre.

i once had a 12" released that topped sales in australia for a month, and recieved a whopping $5 dollars AUS for it!! i didn't even bother cashing the cheque, [might frame it for a wall hanging eh?]

but that is pretty much the only negative experience i've had with labels, and most i talk to now are honest and give a good upfront [release date] advances.

i think it is only natural that the first few forays out with compilations you might get stiffed a bit, [but hopefully not TOO much] and when you are established you will be much more confident about your abilities and what your worth,

so my advice is to get to know the label guys and gals better, cos psy-people are the most reasonable around...

Indeed some labels pay advance and some dont.

I released a track on a label which didn't pay anything in advance, but they did pay me after they sold all the printed CDz - which wasn't so much. But I got all the info about how many CDz printed, how much sold - promos - everything - Still hope it wasn't false information.

but the cheque was pretty much admirable afterall. And I even asked another person on the same compil if he got the same amount - just to see how fair everything was.

So just go with it - and release the god damned tracks. At first it's never about the money - even if ur screwed with the money part - u'll be happy about the release

Thanks for all the replies everyone - I now feel like I can make some much more informed decisions when it comes to choosing labels.

One other question however - what about the duration of a contract? One contract I have states that there is "no time limit", thus the copyright will never revert back to me. I find this a little disturbing - shouldn't it revert back to me in like five years or something like that?

This should ALWAYS be negotiable... some labels do, and some don't. unless they already have a master plan for your music, they should listen to you.

I definitely WILL ask the labels but it's good to be prepared with some more objective third-party opinions before doing so. I like to be informed before actually "getting down to business"
