How serious is this [in particular, around New Year & beginning of January 2008]?

Question to those who know the situation in Goa:
Is this declared "no-tolerance attitude" resulting in _actual_ prohibition/limitation of parties activities?

Well who wants to see their home be a place where people go to get fucked up? Obviously trancers wore out their welcome a long time ago. Goa isnt the only place where this is a concern, even the Netherlands have been making moves to restrict drug tourism by making mushrooms illegal and proposals a while back to only let Dutch citizens buy cannabis.

People should try to change the culture in their own country to be more accepting of the psychedelic culture instead of putting it off on someplace with tolerant locals, and in the end making the locals regret their tolerance. Its like a weird kind of colonialism.

I've never been to Goa, and I dont particularly care if I ever do. I clearly have missed the time when things were good. If they say they dont want me there, I have enough respect not to go.

this is not true any more...the goa govt makes more money from the non trnace tourists tht come from all over india (thanks to dil chahta hai)...and they can do without the old hippies, buget travellers trancers, etc etc...

I'll second that.
Only been to Goa once; last winter, at the end of the season,at Arambol, and was quite shocked by the state of the place.Psycosmo is completely right;imagine what it must be like to live surrounded by mad "hippies" partying 24 hours a day.......
Okay, it's brought a lot of money into the area over the years, but there's enough tourism of a calmer (and wealthier) kind now that they don't need "us" any more.....
Maybe if people had respected the place a little more, rather than using it as a playground/dustbin, things'd be different. The jetset(undistinguishable from the "real" hippies except that they've got no mosquito bites and no scars from scooter accidents)with their haughty attitude probably haven't helped matters, but the blame lies all the same on those that came to party because they couldn't do it in their own countries.....
Colonialism indeed!
The question is, is there a way to reverse the situation, or is it too late????
Goa will probably finish like the Spanish coast(which they still haven't finished building up!)......the gangrene is even rapidly creeping into Morrocco;three years ago you could squat anywhere on the coast, trade with local fishermen;everyone was happy.....then foreigners bought the campsites and hotels.....now the police escort you to campsites.
Apparently, people still haven't understood that even if we see trance as a philosophy and way of life, rather than just another form of music, the outward appearance, for the rest of the world, is of a bunch of drug-crazed jetsetters imposing their noise on the third world......
Something radical needs to be done to change the image.....if it's just an image...

As Raja Ram said... search for greener pastures! The world is yours! Goa isn't the old Goa since a few years and is never gonna go back there. Convincing or cribbing about the authorities, is never going to make things better.           Om Trayambakam Yajaamahe
