Review:

“Temptations” is the first album from Anders Nilsson and Nikos “Arara” Kostoglu” – together known as Andromeda. This is actually the 2nd new album from Anders, as he’s also a part of the project Chromosome, who just released their first album “The Genome Project”. I didn’t know anything Andromeda before this album, apart from hearing a couple of tracks by Chromosome, but the album received a fair amount of praise after the release, so after checking out the samples, I decided to give it a try.

The album is released by Yellow Sunshine Explosion (subdivision of Millennium Records), probably best known for releasing loads and loads of “Goa” compilations the last couple of years. The cover is designed by Arara himself, and white is more or less the overall colour. Add a couple of pictures of a Japanese girl, some English and Japanese (I guess) text and you’re there. Ok, but nothing special - so I’ll skip on to the music;

The first track starts out slow with some samples from the first “Kill Bill” movie. The intro is more or less Hattori Hanzo (the Japanese with the swords) speaking, but the rest of the track is also filled with “Kill Bill” samples – both voices, and some water-sounds from the ending garden-scene with O-Ren Ishii. Musically it’s pretty good, mellow progressive, and a nice teaser for the rest of the album.

“I-zone” continues the show in a more dance-friendly way, with a nice and happy bouncy groove and some sweet little melodies and beautiful pads. That’s more or less the recipe throughout the album, and while it’s perhaps not extremely original, it still works very well on me – from the blissful “Eyelipse”, to the darker Atmonizer with characteristic porn-samples, the punchy “Out Of The Limites”, and the middle-eastern sounds of “The Last Temptation”. Ending the album is “Fluting AROUND” - a very cool downbeat track with a chilled grand finale – perhaps inspired a bit by Etnicas classic “Trip Tonite” ?

Bottom line:

“Temptations” is surely one of the biggest surprises so far this year. I keep falling deeper and deeper into this very emotional album, and while it’s perhaps not as deep as the albums from artists like A.K.D. and Cosmic Tone (the first one), it should be a must-have for fans of gentle and beautiful, uplifting progressive trance.

Favourites:

2, 3 (!!), 4, 7

Verdict:

8/10 – Definitely worth checking out

There’s one thing I don’t understand by the way – why didn’t anyone review this beauty before me?          DJ pr0fane (Iboga Records) | Multiphase

IMO, this album is OK, but not that great either. Most of the tracks are a little flat, and the melodies are kinda predictable. I wish more tracks were like number 8, which has a great ending with a rolling type of bassline. I think probably the fact that there have been some awesome melodic prog albums released lately (Son Kite, Freq) kinda overshadows this release.

Nice floaty morning album... enjoyable for a while, but nothing special... but then again, I'm not a progressive fan..           How am I supposed to hallucinate with all these swirling colors distracting me!

This album is the biggest surprise for me this year I can say... a great discovery for me really... it's so fascinating with it's various and enchanting melodies... the bassline is really nice and mellow too... I haven't stopped listening to 'Temptations' since it appeared, I can only say a big "THANK YOU" to those two guys for the happiness they gave me with this album
My favourites : Atmonizer, The Last Temptation,
Liquid Fairies.. but of course the rest of the album too

Waiting for more ))
And a question : is there some other e-mail address apart from that of their label?

I finally received my copy two days ago and this is floating, rich and full progressive music with some real good 'Chromosome' influences. Not suprisingly since Anders Nilsson is also in this one. Anyway, the way the whole album breathes that japanese atmosphere is nicely done and the music is just great! Subtle melodies, soft on the ears yet a pretty good bass production. Not to be missed if you like your progressive music. As said before by me (and others) here, we're definitely being spoiled by all the great progressive music out there. 2004 has so far been a great progressive year and these albums like Kooler, Vision & Canedy, Son Kite etc. etc. are albums I expect to be listening for years to come..
