i've tweaked a virus b and a virus c rack. c stands for crap and b for better > sound and ease of use.

Go for it! Compared to novation the older virus models have way more grit and punch and they will compliment each other well. As for the converters being better on the older models: No they are not! they might sound better though, but thatīs a whole other issue I love my A to pieces but i use my TI quite a bit too. Itīs all about realizing that every model has itīs charms.
On the older models those charms are way more immediate though and at the price they fetch used nowadays itīs a no brainer if one pops up for sale.

just for the filter the C worth it over the b to me + few other things like more modulation source and destination, you get used to the menus in no time ... the C is imo very well done interface but i never heard the b/c side by side ,can t comment on the sound. a friend have a A and love it . |

i <3 my C and use it for lots of 'bread and butter' synth sounds.
the funny thing about the virus is that taken individually, none of the component parts are incredible... the filters are good, the oscs are good, the modulation is good, the FX are ok... but altogether? it just adds up to something special.
that's why although Nord's filters are better or Waldorf's wavetables more impressive, the Virus just works as a whole. having so many knobs is a key part of it - almost all the major soundshaping functions have a dedicated control. my virus C desktop has 32 knobs, which means synthesis is just a joy.

i didn't use the 'digital' waves on my virus a lot, as the implementation is just basic.
you can't go wrong with saw in a virus. just do the psylead-things!
2 medium to high saws slightly detuned
bandpass or highpass filter(s)
cutoff as you wish, resonance high
adjust filter and amp adsr
saturate the filter
let it glide
now modulate everything with everything
+ add delay and reverb
you can make lots of different leads with variations of these settings.
1 saw, lower oktave
thin bandpass filter
high cutoff, high resonace
modulate pitch by anything you like, adsr should suit best, or get a nice pattern with glide.
modulate other settings to your likes
i remember i liked the arpeggiator patterns on my virus much more than on all other synths i tried.
fm is cool on the virus, too. and you can make cool kicks, basses and hihats.
after all it's a va synth and does what a va does. just turn it on and trance leads will come out, i'm sure.
the audio routing is really great in the virus.
so have fun with it! |

just to clear....
i dont expect anyone to share his self discovered 'techniques' .thats what makes everyone different.
there are some tricks that have been shared for ages now...if you get to know those then you have a good starting point..
i want to share knowledge...not 'presets'
