AMBIENT has been is the scene for centuries!
Sacred chants & classical music can be considered as ambient too but as regarding today's ambient I started my trip by listening to RETURN TO THE SOURCE mixes back in 1994 - Future sounds of London and selected ambient works by Aphex twin.

Some Aphex Twin, Brian Eno of course.
But yes ambient has been around for centuries.
I would include some of the classics as well.

my first ambient/electronic touch was with jean michel jarre and brian eno..
as for psy-ambient/dub hmm
shpongle/infinity project/saafi brothers etc..
Music may not take us to the Moon or let us live forever, but as we enter trough the doors it is opening before us, we find things far beyond our everyday experiences..
