I wonder what made u start listening to Ambient and Chill music....

As far as i know, most of Ambient fans were in a search of a magnificent world (yeehhhh...Shulman was abolutely wright about that).

Concerning to me, I was a big fan of P.Trance and Tribal music, untill one day a friend of mine gave me a tape of Leftfield (remember his fantastic album-Leftisem?) and after I realised that i'm in love with his fantastic track, melt, the way to Ambient was very short.
Few months later I had a trip to India and the rest of it is a history....
:)

How about u?

Are there here any members that discovered Ambient before Trance?

...well...i allways liked ambient music...When i discovered electronic music back in the mid ninteens, maybe 95 or 96, i had lucky enough to listen to the likes of Future Sounds of London, Orb, Dreadzone, Autechre, Seefeel, Sounds From the Ground, Lucky People Center, and so on...Than i got deeper into dub Vibes, and started collecting loads of Dubs made in Europe, and realized that the feelling of those artists where very close to the ambient and chillout scene also, and for me it was wonderfull as i could listen to albums full of danceable elements and also ambient and chillout ...My devotion to ambient music has been growing since than,)

For me listening to chill-out music goes back to the 70's and beginning of the 80's when I started listening to Brian Eno, Robert Fripp, Roger Eno, Robert Leiner and Harold Budd. Good chill-out music has always had a relaxing or meditative effect. Chill-out can take me to any place when I close any eyes and let go.

I guess I have my deepest connections to ambient/chillout from the time when I owned an Amiga (yeah, mostly from game tunes), and later on, from the time I started attending demoparties. Some of the music in that scene was quite extraordinary (And it's funny to witness that some of the ambient/chillout music available nowadays, is made by acts with roots back in this scene)

Also, about this time, I heard a lot of Jean Michel Jarre. That really was beautiful for a youngster like me at that time - and still is.

Later on, my interest for trance and other genres began to take over, and left the ambient/chillout a little behind in the game.

But within the last couple of years, I've started to take a greater interest in the genre again, and it is now what I primarily listen to.

For everyday-life, everyday-melancholy, everyday-happiness, deeper thinking and as a way to percieve the world, it's an incredible asset.

For me, the reason I started listening to it, more than any other genre, is because chillout gives me inner harmony, and takes me to that emotional place where I feel more alive then ever which I feel is the pinnacle of consciousness. While, ambient really picks me up, and allows for great waves of thought.

I started listening to it fairly recently, as a Portuguese girl I know, invited me to hers for a few chill out sessions, and I grew to love the music and ambience.

I never gave any attention to ambient and chill until very recently

then I took an acid and listened to Ott live last year in Transit... that changed my view, and since then I´ve been totally addicted to it

I guess that with my development in electronic music, ambient and downtempo electronica was always there: FSOL, The KLF, Young Gods, etc. I also always liked reggea and the way to dub was natural.

However, only in the last 5-6 years, as I lowered the level of noise in my personal life, ambient and downtempo music, took more and more part in my listening time. Music you can dive into and travel with to far away places without making so much noise

In the mid to late 80's I used to go to alot of the English free festivals , the music was still at that time psychedelic rock / art punk based there was quite a scence in the uk of Hawkwind / Gong influenced bands Poisoned Electrick Head, Omnia Opera, Webcore, Magic Mushroom band although it was guitar based it certainly had ambient moments. I suppose Ozrics are the only real suvivors from this time. By the early 90's however a new breed of festival bands were emerging and playing alongside these other acts Tribal Drift, Loop Guru and Banco de Gaia were turning up and playing, the music was more technology based I loved this new direction I just knew these were the sounds that I wanted to be listening to. And I have since really...

oh yeah, shahar, now that you mentioned, I was also always into reggae... When driving back home from a party or festival, I always put some bob marley on, just chilling.... so it was also a natural path into dub too..

I'm a total fresher on the scene considering that the first ambient tune that really made me sit up and take notice was Abacus - California Sunshine Till date it remains one of my favorite tunes But that was AFA the psybient scene was concerned. Prior to that it was TJ Rehmi's sound that had really interested me in the whole downtempo scene. TJ Rehmi - Warm Chill, is a must have for anybody who enjoys eastern influenced chill tunes

After that though I really caught up with the scene quickly and have refined my tastes over a period of time. Everytime I wanna take my mind off mundane matters, I find myself listening to some sweet dub flavored chillout.

One thing for sure- No doubt that Shpongle and Simon posford had a huge affect on every Ambient fan.

Concerning me- I owe a lot to MAJIK of Raja Ram
who was the first to pave me the way to heaven.

As both of my parents are musicians and music teachers, I grew up listening to and performing instrumental and vocal music.

I quickly developed my own tastes in my early teens years, as most people do. The local college / community radio station exposed me to Eno, Tangerine Dream, and other ambient artists. Some of my favorite music from my school years is the instrumental / conceptual music on labels like 4ad, which I sometimes play in my sets 20 years after their release (and the Orb's latest track samples This Mortal Coil).

When I got to college I became a DJ at two radio stations where artists like Future Sound of London, Orbital, and Aphex Twin found me rather than the other way around. I also DJed a separate world music show; Peter Gabriel had just started his Real World label after the release of his Passion soundtrack to Last Temptation of Christ.          Saturnia
