It tears my heart to have to write these words, but after my magazine editor said that she would send me a copy of the Shpongle remix album for review, I almost pounced onto the postman each day until it arrived. When it did eventually arrive because I was already late for work, I quickly jammed it into my walkman and off I went expecting to be transported into a wonderland of ecstasy, intrigue and endless meandering by the shamanic drumming of Posford and Raja Ram. But that was not to be……
Don’t get me wrong; the music itself was exquisite, finely tuned masterpieces each exemplifying both its creator and genre, but that was it. Too one who, like many others I wager, has endlessly listened to never ending tales of Shpongle on many a chill-out and come down when the mind is still wandering but the body exhausted, has found that they speak a psychedelic language that is qualitatively different from the formulaic. Somehow through their total immersion into the technology Shpongle have managed to escape into a realm that is organic – it is beyond trance, beyond concept, beyond everything except the unfolding of new neurological pathways into a world that is…… beyond.
So when I listened to the remixes, I naively expected to have the same depth of experience; to be taken away from the reality of the world – to be told a story with no beginning middle and end. What I got was instead a bastardisation of the rhythms and melodies I had grown to love, all of them, on that relative scale, pale to the original. It is like taking a classic of literature like Romeo and Juliet, cutting it up into nine parts, sending off the words from those nine parts to a diverse collection of writers and telling them to rewrite their section and then at the end of the day expect a coherent and fluid story back – it just won’t happen. As tracks all the remixes as I have said are good, but Shpongle aren’t about tracks, they are about an experience that you just never want to end. They are the truly tuned in. I have said for years now that if our generation had to present its shamanic drummers to the Gods, it would be Raja Ram and Posford. So forget the remixes, that just waters down the product. Wait for the real thing because if the last two albums are anything to go by, they will blow us all away. I have no doubt in that.

i have traveller, i have......
at the end of the day it is only my opinion......
i feel that the one of the core elements that make shpongle is its psychedelic purity and that should not be tampered with, a shamanic meeting of consciousnesses......
i'll wait until they are ready to hit us with something new, that i am happy to do.!

u know it's not like this album was ment to sound like shpongle.. pretty much the opposite actually since it's other artists remixing shpongle.. each giving their own vision of what the track they remixed should have been like.. or something like that.. nevertheless it's psychedelic as hell for least..

1,2,3,4,5,6,7

all 100% psychedelic

8 is just beautiful..           "The dinosaurs became extinct because they didn't have a space program."

forgot the magic word "imho"

anyways.. how long have you had the album? a few days is definetly not enough.. some of the tracks don't really unfold that fast..           "The dinosaurs became extinct because they didn't have a space program."

This release, like all of Shpongle (so far) is indeed beautiful, and as the name suggests (remixes...), it is other's perception of Shpongle's vision, and will never be the same.
As for your remark, Traveller, you know - different people have different views and not all of them have to agree with you, even if you really really liked this album. It feels like you are trying to convince people and have a 100% positive thread for Shpongle - its nice to see that someone has the 'guts' to say otherwise about a 'holy cow' like Shpongle (although I agree with your review, it is indeed another masterpiece).

Great work on the album, another brick in the immortal wall of Shpongle!

Just got this in the mail today. I was worried that I spent my last 20$ on a crappy remix album of some of the best music ever. I needed not to wory. This is some of the best work I have heard latly. I was hoping for a bit of full on maddness but this is wonderful. I will have my head buried in this one for an age I am shure.

Different that what Freaky Bob said here - the problem isn't that people remixed Shpongle. Shpongle is great and definately unique music, but out of all the tracks on the album, only one artist prooved that there's no need to be intimidated by the name. From Prometheus's Leftfieldesque energies to Eat Static's DnB grooves, Brothomstates was the only track here that added an in depth interpertation of a track here.

This is my favorite remix album since Floating Seeds Remixed, and it compares favorably to that album in most parameters... but the artists that did the remixing here didn't go as far as they could have.

I didn't hear it yet (and probably not in the next year ), but from what I've heard here, it seems people were looking for a shpongle 3 album, hence something better.
But this is a remixes album, each artist with his own interpertation of the album.
kaz stated that only brothomstates did it well, but again, I didn't listen so can't judge it.
