from an earlier topic - a bit more than a few albums, but look for my buying suggestions then its not so many)

All right - This is PSY according to KRELL. (theres plenty of opinions out there, so this is just mine - Ive followed the music since 1994/95 - 1995 as a DJ&Organizer)

The Psytrance Music can take you down 6 Main paths

PSYCHEDELIC, MELODIC, FULL ON, TECH, PROGRESSIVE & CHILLOUT

I will give you some recommendations, chronologicly for each path. The words "Goa Trance" and "Psychedelic Trance" can be used with everything in these 6 categories - They have ALL been encountered frequently at "goa style parties".

PSYCHEDELIC (now also developed into more aggressive "Dark Psy" which crosses into Full On)

1996 Astral Projection "The Astral Files" - TIT/Phonokol - http://www.discogs.com/release/44980

1999 Infected Mushroom "The Gathering" - BNE - http://www.discogs.com/release/35821

-> I suggest you buy
2004 Vibe Tribe "Melodrama" - Utopia Records - http://www.discogs.com/release/355133

FULL ON (this style often crosses into melodic & psychedelic)
1998 Oforia "Delirious" - Dragonfly Records - http://www.discogs.com/release/451853
1999 VA "Psycho Tropic" - 3D Vision - http://www.discogs.com/release/123556
2001 Alien Project "Midnight Sun" - Phonokol - http://www.discogs.com/release/42868
2002 Astrix "Eye to Eye" - Hom-Mega Productions - http://www.discogs.com/release/66007
2003 Wrecked Machines "Blink" - Etnicanet - http://www.discogs.com/release/162539

-> I suggest you buy
2005 Wrecked Machines "Second Thought" - Spun - http://www.discogs.com/release/430285

TECH (this style often crosses into progressive, sometimes also full on)
1998 Montauk P "Def=Lim" - Blue Room Released - http://www.discogs.com/release/68914

2002 X-Dream "Irritant" - d.Drum - http://www.discogs.com/release/71405
2002 VA "Chronika Chapter One" - Boshke Beats Records - http://www.discogs.com/release/51242

-> I suggest you buy
2000 Spirallianz "Blast Food" Spirit Zone Recordings - http://www.discogs.com/release/31749

PROGRESSIVE (this style crossed into full on, tech, house & melodic)
1997 VA "Technobotanic Tryptamines" - Nephilim Records - http://www.discogs.com/release/356404
1999 VA "Tabernanthe" - Iboga Records" - http://www.discogs.com/release/185529

1998 Celtic Cross - "Hicksville" - Liquid Sound Design/Nova Tekk - http://www.discogs.com/release/43913

-> I suggest you buy
2004 H.U.V.A. Network "Distances" - Ultimae Records - http://www.discogs.com/release/235694

I choose to mention earlier releases rather than new releases... However, I also recommend 1 CD in particular in each genre in order to get a good impression of where the music is now (I like all the releases mentioned though).

There are SO many new releases within each genre - and, I tried to mention some of the ones who have been important to me and many others during the years... Basicly, I try to mention the FIRST one I feel arrived in each genre (from the top of my head) - and then I mention some of the releases I find noteworthy which follow in the pioneering releases slipstream.

Also, last - I would like to encourage you to watch the Son Kite Live in Tokyo DVD - It, for me, creates a very strong backdrop for their live set - Its very dreamy, and I fellt sort of more visually directed in the journey thru their set...

I think, if you get to hear all of these releases + buy the ones I mention + watch the Son Kite DVD - You will have a good impression of what Psy is about, and you will be on your way to building up your own collection of musical gems

wow... thats one hell of a reply...
10x krell, after buying all those i'll be both broke and an expert for psy-trance!
i'll start checking them out.

another question: PSYCHEDELIC, MELODIC,FULL ON, TECH, PROGRESSIVE & CHILLOUT are all types of psy, any other types of trance worth mentioning?

krell I believe that u r wrong!
psychedelic trance still remains psychedelic and the style is stll being delivered by labels like solstice,phantasm,exposure etc and the dark psy was born partly by psychaos and definitely by the debut of XENOMORPH and PARASENSE.as for the others ok           Helicon Sounds Music

Hey man, when you listen enough psytrance you will be able to distinguish between styles.

When did you activelly start enjoying psytrance?

IMO: Thats the best suitable answer to the question.

Once u r really into listening this music, u'll find out the difference, similarities, connexnz & vibes produced by each n every sound thats held into 'PSY' boundary (n there is none.... he he he....)

Happy listening......

I supose answers and examples won't tell you much about psy and trance realted styles, all you can achieve is experience. Listen to trance a lot, and you will notice by yourself what is what.

I think Krell forgot dark, for me it is a different style from others, and I would include melodic in other styles, I mean, there is prog that is melodic and full on that is melodic too. Anyways he stated that it was his opinion and we all have our own.

Furthermore, separating Astral Projection or MWNN from the psychedelic genre he stated... well I do think that AP or Shakta could be as psychedelic as Kox Box or the Infinity Project.. by the way I agree that Krell's Psychedelic genre has developed 'a bit' into the actual darkish one..

Im not wrong.

In no way did I write that purely psychedelic goa trance isnt being produced anymore. What I DID write was that it was being developed into more aggressive "dark Psy" which is more dominant nowadays.

In regards to "dark" goa/psy trance it is true that Xenomorph (and I would say Sandman a lot sooner than Parasense) were among the first to RELEASE music which was in its essence in a dark or diabolic theme. (which was in stark contrast to all the Melodic goa trance being released in the year before).

However, dark and diabolic is not always the same as purely psychedelic. Its my perception that dark psy is more psychedelic than those first dark releases by Sandmand & Xenomorph, and definately a lot more aggressive (due to a more potent sound).

Labels such as Parvati Records have build their sound on what was released on labels such as Koyote, Phantasm and Psychic Deli by artists like Aeternum, Ect, Koxbox, Psychopod and others.. (this is what the people who created Parvati Records would spin at their outdoor parties, and what a LOT of their artist pool were listening to before there was such a genre as "dark psy").

So, those genres are all very close & connected - but there is a shift in attitude, towards a more dark and agressive sound as opposed to the other more laid back psychedelia of early Koxbox, Sandman & Xenomorph for instance.

Best Wishes
