For people that lost their way in all different kinds of trance these days, I made a big mindmap so people can find out what exactly South African Dark Trance, Ethnic Goa Trance or Psychedelic Dub is!

Enjoy! Here is the link

Allthough I dont agree with how the categories are put together, mainly seperating "goa trance" from "psychedelic trance", as well as a somewhat messy placement of "dark psychedelic trance" into two different categories, I think its great to see someone taking the time to formulate all that.

Absolum + Space Tribe, thats not dark psychedelic trance, its recipe, old school, full on.

Also, I dont think you should have "goa trance" and "psychedelic trance" taken apart at all. Rather make a genre called "Goa Psychedelic Trance", since "Goa" is actually more of an era. I know I know, many people think "goa" = "melodies all the time, multilayered"; but why be tied down by that cliché when the truth is that it was much more diversified than that ?
I mean, you can go back in time, and the music is sold as both goa and psychedelic.

MFG dark goa trance ? Give VA "Concept in Dance 2" a listen, theres some dark psychedelic goa trance for you.

The "root" of it all should not be "trance which is psychedelic", but just "trance". That way, you have total freedom to branch out without being defined and limited by the "psychedelic" factor.

Also, The Delta as progressive psychedelic trance ? Thats more like Tech Trance OR Full On. Listen to the sounds, they are distorted and techie, and many of them very dark.

VA "Tales of the Forest" Dark psy ? Cooome on, just because the title of a release includes "forest", doesnt make it to be so. It certainly belongs with stuff like Hux Flux, Koxbox, Psychopod, Ect and so forth. Again, listen to the sound, they compare more to the other acts than to the melodic BOTFB album.

I dont see how you can call anything released 1997-2000 for "Old school psychedelic trance", when the termn psychedelic trance was in use so much earlier... Thats also why Goa = Psy.

The sections I find to be the most precise are.

- Experimental Psychedelic Trance
- Psychedelic Ambient / Chill

There are some definate descrepencies in the map, thats my opinion, but great to see anyone willing to take the time to explain it all somehow, according to their own view on things.

Nice work, actually perfect to help me understand how you "see" the map.

It's very difficult, if not impossible, to have lot's of people agreeing 100% with everything when the issue is classify music per style. What seem to happen is that most people have maps of their own in their head. I agree with Krell, also I think it has too many subdivisions.

Thanks for the link.

its a good way to organize the numerous sub genres within psychedelic trance, but thats always a hard thing to do considering the fact that psytrance itself is so very subjective..I mean some stuff u can say for sure is full on, dark, progressive etc..but when it comes to the sub genres it gets really complicated..thanks for sharing this tho really good to see a map of all this..think i saw one before, but not with examples..although personally I feel uve missed out pure twilight music..but there we go, thats prob just my subjective view

Boom brother!

Many important names from the past and today who was/is a big part of shaping the scene are not present. That would make the tree too complex I guess. It's a tree done out from Anoebis own references and taste and by that I don't give much for it as a "official" guideline for anything but his personal taste and how he personal see the genres. Especially when it's evident that he got a very specific taste that leave out a lot of music and artists.

Nothing wrong with it at all. I just hope people are aware enough to understand this is not the official way of dividing the genres. It's one man's opinion.

Great work nonetheless even with the obvious mistakes and lack of mentioning other important artists.

I think it's shocking that the most influential and experimental melodic psytrance act of all doesn't appear on that map.

Oh and Hallucinogen isn't on there, either.
