Well, the sense of space in music is only an illusion, as (considering a stereo signal) we only have 2 signals at a given time, and all space must be created using these signal values.

So, thinking on how we perceive sounds, if both the left and right signals are the same, we assume the sounds is in the center of the speakers; if both signals are completely different (left pushes in while right pushed out) than we hear a huge stereo effect; if one signal is playing while the other is silent, than we perceive the sound as coming from the side.

Front and back can be accomplished in many ways, the most easy being using volume, but there are many other ways

Up and down doesn't actually exist, however some do argument we note high frequency notes as being higher in space than low frequency notes - so even using EQ we can shift a sounds top-bottom space.

Manipulating these three axis we can have out 3D space effect. If you just want it to be placed in a location, than you can use these techniques to place it; however if you want it to move than you must automate your effects accordingly - and it ends up being like a puppet show, you'll have to pull and move a whole bunch of strings in very particular ways just to make the puppet move a bit in a particular way.

Also, remember you can use space in 3d, playing with time-based effects (delays, reverbs, etc), like imagine you have a room moving in your 3d space; and also imagine you room actually mutates into something else much bigger!

So, manipulate with the time, manipulate the signal values (both in stereo and m/s), manipulate panning and manipulate EQ to get your 3d effect - noticing is always an illusion all the way!

As a tip: figure out what each effects does in a mix context, and you'll be able to exploit 3D positioning much more efficiently - for example a phaser can make a sound spin on it's self, a compressor can limit the dynamic space boundaries (and multi-band can do that independently on different frequencies), etc.

What you shouldn't do is slap on an automated 3d effect and hope you'll be in full control of all, and that you'll create some sort of 3d effect that hasn't been hear before - it comes with hard work           Super Banana Sauce http://www.soundcloud.com/knocz

what i shouldnt do is slap on an automated 3d effect and hope it works? lol wel it worked for me ... i got the sense of hieght i wanted... ambisome isnt really the same as wave arts panaorama.... infact i hate wave arts plugins ..

i variated the chain... and its been heard loooaadz of times, mainly a different approach and combining it with verbs delays then going thru M/s treatment and automation... the point was wantin to create certain depth i had herd b4...
