Calling Dr. India Advice Hotline ..

I'm going to India soon, real soon. And I would like to get some advice about beggers, thiefs and theft in general.

I think I will know how to handle beggers and what to give and when to give, but any advice is appreciated. And what I'm realy wondering about is theft. I'm going to be one of those silly backpackers, and I guess(?) we can become easy targets (all values in one bag) for thiefs and muggers. Of cource it's the issue with Passport, money, VISA card, iPod + Headphones ect. Let's take iPod + Headphones. I'm bringing a iPod, because I can't live and travel without music, and with the iPod I can, if I choose to take with me my baby, my Sennheiser HD-25 Headphones. These costs as much as the iPod, and I'm wondering if it's unvice to wear visual headphones like these because it might attract unwanted attention? Passport and shit I will of course hide nicly inside my backpack bag, and the bag I will defend.

So is there a lot of unwanted muggers roaming around, or is it fairly safe to travel around, even for a easy big score target like a backpacker? I have never even been outside Europe, so please have me excused for silly questions and doubt about the peoples honours about not mugging.

Any advice is more then welcome concering my overall question.

peace & light,
Jan-Erik, just another backpacker..

About beggars / hawkers... learn to say Chalo (means go away), you could add a 'mata chut' on the end if they don't go away. If you speak to them in Hindi, they generally get the idea you're not up for being scammed. If they still don't go away, just look upwards and say 'pagal hai' (means is crazy)

Keep passport, tickets and cash in a zipped waist pouch under your trousers

Then just have the best time of your life travelling, knowing that important documents etc are safe

And make sure you take squillions of pictures

@psytones
well the shortest advise i can give is 'Meet me ASAP' (well then ofcourse i'll guide u much more then writing ova here)

well bout the headphones yes it's not adcisable to bring those here.

2nd thing jus be street smart n i dont think u'll have problems

dont eat nething from neone u dont know (very advisable)

beggers, well in India u have to have a heavy heart & jus avoid em'

also lemme know where & wen u travellin (which region of India) so i can be more specific in travelling tips

a wise man once told me 'neva act like a tourist & u'll neva have ne problem'           the problem with valuing art is, till u dont understand it, it's worthless but wen u do understand it, it's priceless!!

Also... about keeping ur cash safe in a zipped pocket... always go into a toilet to kinda put x amount of rupees in you trouser pocket. Last thing you wanna do is open up that secret zip pocket infront of ANYONE

And make sure when you do change money, you get alot of small notes

unfortunately that kind of things happens very often on third world countries like mine Mexico, where they have to make a living even by ripping people off, remember me last NYE in the Caribbean sea walking in Playa del Carmen Mexico, man I m Mexican and they tried to ripped us when we rented the car, yes by Mexicans because i was speaking english with my British friends so i had to tell'em man I m just like you dont fuck me off and start slanging on spanish so they get me!
and we paid the real rent price. less than 45usd of what he tried to charge us.
there is a saying that goes: "depending of the size of the frog is the size of the rock you throw at it" so as they see you they charge you.....
also while travelling to south america the same thing happend due now to my accent, they think mexicans are rich or something!
funny thing! always avoidable.....

Hello hotline!

Just booked my ticket to India, 1st time there! Arriving Oct 15th in Delhi, flight out not booked yet, but I'm thinking early December from Calcutta to Bangkok.

So I'll have about 7 weeks to travel from Delhi to Cal, any suggestions to where I should go would be great. I'm thinking I'll just be following the wind, depending on who I meet and how I'm feeling, but it would be nice to have some advice...

Also along the lines of spytooned psytones question regarding travelling with expensive equipment... I have quite an expensive digital camera I would like to travel with, will this be a constant stress to have it with me? Should I sell it before I leave and buy a cheap one that fits in my pocket? Or if it's always in my backpack or strapped around my neck will I be ok? I guess there's no question about ever leaving it in my hotel room so this means I'll have to have it on me 24/7... Will I be seen as prey walking around with it?

Thanks!           «They who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who dream only by night.»

well late oct is quite late to go to north of the country, but if u are used to cold weather u sud'nt have an problem
try going to manali & then jus flow along the state of Himachal Pradesh.
u wont be able to go many places at this time of the year as it'll start snowing in high altittude places, but manali & parvati valley will be open so u get sum nice rubbing action

u can also travel to south india as the climate will start moderating by then.

1 advice as u have only 3 weeks i suggest u fix which part of the country u wud like to see otherwise u'll be jus travelling all the time & not staying at a place (which personally i dont recommend)

as for expensive equipment i've already replied to psytones so dont need to write again.           the problem with valuing art is, till u dont understand it, it's worthless but wen u do understand it, it's priceless!!
