Happy new year and much light and love to all.
For me classical music does it. Electronic music doesn't really hit the heart too much for me. Looking forward to Psy Fi Festival this summer anyhow           https://soundcloud.com/shivagarden

Some of us aren't complete washed up cultists & junkies believing rubbish about ego etc. and are happy to make a buck via music and dj'ing.

If this scene could drag its ass in to bring even moderately commercially viable I reckon it'd imptove beyond it's current cyclical state of boring repetition.           Cuntus Maximus.

^ It's a bit of a paradox, Mike:
- psytrance needs to become commercially viable in order to escape boring repetition,
- yet commercial success is one of the vehicles of standardization, stereotyping, lock-in etc.

I think the simplest way to solve this is to acknowledge that your thesis is just wrong

Regardless, if you want commercial success - go for it. Nothing wrong with that New Year wish either.

Why does Psy trance need to become commercially viable to escape repetition? Surely it is possible to avoid commercialism and repetition simultaneously...

^ like I said, Mike's thesis if flawed at best, if not plain wrong. Commercial success brings conformity, not variety. Witness a decade of music by Nirvana and Pearl Jam clones, named - very ironically - "alternative rock". How is it alternative if half of the radiostations in the city play it around the clock?..

Actually those alternative bands were around & part of underground scenes for quite some time prior to commercial success. Also the idea that because you make money & haves songs played makes you any less underground sounding... Well sure some changes are made to be commercially viable but as a purveyor of electronic music across the entire spectrum for the last 25 years I can tell you that it really comes down to marketing & accessibility.

This scene chooses to continually mark itself as a global hippy movement, an alternative life choice, and much of the music is sold independently even of Beatport.

Such things are fine but it gets tiring hearing that muso's can't afford gear. Labels can't afford to pay the muso's. Promoters can't afford to pay the performers.

Well maybe if this scene made even a slight change to marketability more money could filter through.

I know promoters who like some of the glitch stuff but jthe full scale events would actually lose ticket sales with the Psy Trance tag line!!           Cuntus Maximus.

That musicians tend to prefer an alternative life choice is something as old as the civilization.

The problem is not the way of distribution - earlier lots of music was available in every possible distributor network but this did not make the musicians rich either . The problem is that if you want to make money with music (for longer time beyond the fashion buzz of a festival) you have to make it for (older) rich people who can afford it and to whom 15 minutes time searching in the p2p networks is more valuable than the 10 bugs for the music. They throw ten bugs over and over again every day for other media too.

And to be honest, in earlier years while I had the feeling that music is made for me too , I had no bugs to buy cds at all. Nowadays I prefer commodity than hanging around in p2p networks, but I do not have the feeling that trance music targets me in any way (although it probably does, but there are no marketers to persuade me about it). At least in my country, I believe that music and parties are made only for the poor, according to their needs and budget, according to their believes and interests. In this case I do not see why anyone wonders about the way it is.

Btw what happend to the premium modell of ektoplazm? Never heard anything...

For 2015 again, I wish this year will bring at least one good festival for me and my friend to go, which is something that never happends since years. But wishes are allowed in january.

p.s. just in case the "hunting wolfs" come to spoil my mood again, i want to add : no, i do not think that i have anything to do with "rich people". i just wanted to express that i have the feeling, whatever i would do with trance festivals and trance music nowadays, it will give me the feeling that i dont belong there, that it is a bad thing to work for good money, to have a good job at all, to spend money for good art and good money for good fun. this is because musicians too are sure that their target sits very low in the social hierarchy and if i have a glimpse at the public at the partys in my country, this is unfortunately not very false nowadays. the 1000 bugs for thailand from social fare will not change it either.

anywhere, end of thinking. keep on with this north american "lets make it bigger" thingy. in nevada they seem to know why they have the smartest heads visiting them.
