I have a part in a song where two melodies
plays at the same time and it sounds messy.
Anyone who has suggestions on how i can fit them in my song. Could i use a gate routed from the bass or something similar? |

if you dont want to change the octave on one of the melodies or eq/filter too much you can always pan them to opposite sides, has helped me before

There are many reasons why two melodies can sound great together, and why they may sound horrible.. But help up help you and show us an example

Mmmmh you could try better Eq, not hitting the same note at the same time with both leads, try different rhythms with every melody, try different sounds for each melody if one is in the low mid range, make the other higher etc,, , but you can put more than 2 at the same time, that's really psychedelic, |

Sorting that out is the whole point of counterpoint. Or rather writing them so that they do sound great together. |

The main thing to remember is that the melodies must complement each other, no point eqing them to death if they dont work together. Try removing notes from one of the melodies to see if it helps them sit.

yes. melodies must sound good by themselves. but they also need to work well together.
play with octaves. or with levels. two loud non-complementary melodies at the same time may sound bad...
dynamic eq. |

You can also cut them up in different segments in the mixing stage, make them chase eachother. |

its not a question of EQ or octave, thats just obvious...
its two leads with diferent notes i guess
if u are using the same scale, and u have many notes on each leads u should try to make one main lead with any number of diferent notes and in the other lead use Chord Progression (there is a topic here about it) notes, or try to use like 3 or 4 notes at max on the second lead...like the first, third and fith note from the scale, it should fit together...
two high melodic different leads would be a challange for music artists to do

Problem with counterpoints it is not always very "trance":y in the regard it often becomes a little well-tempered and Bach:esque.
J.S. Bach was a master in the area, check out his "Well tempered claviere", his Fugues and "The Goldberg variations". Anyone old enough to have played Pirates! on Amiga will know what I talk about. |
