So 1337 and I were chatting and it turns out that we both bought our Virus TI's from Jay @ http://www.microdotmusic.com/ and got an awesome deal which was quite a few grand less than the famous music store we won't name *cough* exceptthatitbeginswithaBandendswithanRandhasa'othne'inthemiddle.

(Oh yeah, also bought an amazing Samson sub from him which has probably done more to get my production skills to the next level than any other gear purchase I've made in the last five years...)

Which brings up the next logical question: Anyone else know of decent sources for pro audio kit that won't rip you off in ZA or have any cool stories to share ?

PLUR and say: "share the luuuuuuuuurv!"

I had an interesting discussion with Jay, about distributors and resellers, where he told me a story about some dude who tried to pose as a reseller and buy a whole lot of gear cheap from him or somthing....

lets take the virus for example, if jay sold it to any music store for the same price we buy it from him....he would make the same profit selling it either way , which would be ideal for him , however the other music store would have to hitch up the price to make profit.....

going straight through someone like jay, the registered distributor seems to be the answer, i.e straight to the middle man, or if bothners and jay split what would be jay's profit, things could stay cheapish, or rather not as expensive....

i still think the store with the P and B are too greedy and will rip off any non diserning customer in a jiffy

a few years bak when my dad was first going to start his own studio, the one dude tried to sell my dad a R50 000 Roland harddisk recorder.....they ahve very manipulative salesman.... anyways, this isnt a P B attack (ok actually it is:P)

it would be nice if it were possible to get shit here in SA at UK prices but of course with the shipping cost attached.

they were very honest with me when i went to buy studio monitors - and in fact told my mate who just bought a Virus TI that it would be much cheaper to get the desktop version, which they didn't have. so he did. still R14000 though!!

This is nothing new though...

I remember way back when I was still living in Joburg buying myself a Yamaha TG-??? sound module direct from the importers for just over half the price that TOMS were moving it at...

Maybe part of the problem is that we don't really have more than one major music store per city - not like the USA where you can walk into a one horse town and have about five to choose from each of which is the size of TOMS&Bothners put together...

And then there's salt in the wound when we consider the huge 2nd hand market over there...

Once picked up a Shure SM58 and a Gibson Les Paul Studio and still had change from $300

*sigh*

Speaking of Yamaha, I just remembered that I have a good friend here in Cape Town who used to be registered as a dealer with them so if anyone needs anything (i88x firewire audio interface anyone? *drool* ) just give me a shout and I'll check with him whether he still deals!

Jay's initial quote to me on the desktop TI was R12000..... see the pattern, and you can buy a Polar or 61-key in UK for about R15000 or there abouts

PB for me my realise they are not running a monopoly anymore, and there are other avenues to getting gear. it would be nice tho if PB came to the party and selled shit for cheaper, since they have a better support base than say buying from a distributor....

that being said, when i got my virus, i had gotten a polar which had been loaded with desktop TI factory firmware, so it was not aware that it actually had keys/....which was nt very amusing at the time, jay sorted it out for me pronto... which was cool

i have also bought gear from MusiekWereld , we seem to be able to get shit from them pretty well discounted, duno if its because they are just cheaper or if its because of my dad! i think its because they are cheaper , so when you are pricing gear, give them a call as well!

just for laughs i mailed them for prices on the best Protools rig, they were all keen to send out an agent, until i told them i was in SA, were they promptly became pissed off, and referred me to the SA distributor (who deals in Focusrite as well, some lady, cant remeber her name, but if you need Focusrite or Tools stuff, go direct through her)

Yeah, they were probably referring to the lady from Mactracs? (her name escapes my mind at the moment)

speaking of gear, anyone know when the new novation remote SL controllers are arriving with Jay and what prices will be like? Specifically the ZERO model which looks like the perfect multi purpose midi controller

Cheers,
psyway

Yeah... Mactracs. Jenny. She's pretty clued up on Protools and Mac gear.

Well, I suppose Sweetwater will only ship certain gear then. Very strange. Must be some sort of conspiracy.

Oh yeah... Focusrite ROCKS.

I got a Voicemaster Platinum Pro about a month ago at a crazy cheap price... and .. even though this baby is one of the cheaper focusrite pre-amps.... it really helps... and gives the audio signal such a crisp sound... especially vocals.           Mind my mind.

Interesting thing about sweetwater, if you log onto their site and search for anything made by Behringer you get this msg:
----
> At this time, we have chosen not to carry Behringer.
>If you're looking for quality musical gear we stand behind many manufacturers including Peavey, Mackie, Samson, Hartke, BOSS, and more.
----

Agree with you on the Focusrite stuff, it is quality gear, have you seen the liquid mix and liquid channel, extremely innovative devices!

cheers,
psyway.
