Do you guys mind if I start this thread? I want us to post all types of tips and tricks you found for Psytrance, when doing certain routing combos in the Mod Matrix. Maybe we could even upload patches and link em here?
Ill post some cool things I've created when I am home (at work now). |

Same as with the albino mod matrix, any 'modular' vsti, some of logic's internal synths and a few other examples, the modulation matrix (or any synth/softsynth that's programmable to a certain degree) allows you to make life simpler, but of course, that comes at a price.
The point is very simple, you choose one form of "controller" (envelope, LFO, velocity, modwheel, etc) to set a knob/slider/whatever (a parameter), in what way you want the parameter to react to the control's value (input), and how deeply the controller effects the parameter and the forms of reaction (linear add/sub, etc).
I made a short guide about how ADSR envelopes act in a general way ( http://forum.isratrance.com/viewtopic.php/topic/53973/forum/2 ), the envelopes being the most basic control input. These are "trigger" controls, and every time you play a note these will immediately start to change the value.
LFOs are pretty self-explanitory, and other controls are usually pretty simple to work with (and usually unecessary, excluding velocity which I find handy to give a more dynamic feel).
A controller can be in ONE setting at a time, meaning that even if you play a note 8 times very fast and you can hear rich polyphonic sound, the modulation will only read from ONE value per line, so there may be incosistencies in values with (for instance) long releases in envelopes (or with sharp changes in velocity).
Basically, the modulation matrix does not give you an option that you can't do via "normal" automation, and going overboard with a lot of LFOs stuck everywhere tends to give you a sound that's hard to control in a mixdown. On the other hand, using LFOs that aren't synced can help you achieve a much less rigid and much more flowing sound, even if the changes are barely noticeable. The "tricks" in the mod-matrix are not tricks at all, they're just ways to automate things without working hard. Even though it's much easier, working randomly will probably take a lot more time for good results than understanding what each value means.
A DJ that's busy playing around with all the effects and tricks when spinning will probably be nothing more than annoying unless he REALLY knows what he's doing - too much messing around with modulations will probably give you an inconsistant sound that will not fit into your track.

well said kaz!! my pulse also has a mod matrix, it's a way to make a synth semi-modular...
trick for psytrance: put an lfo on a second lfo and let that lfo control the pitch, if thesecond one is synced to tempo u'll hear some great effects |

guys, I meant this thread to share our tricks assuming you already know how to use the Mod Matrix. Not a tutorial on how to use it. SO what are some good combos of tricks. U know like maybe..
Osc1 set to FM.
LFO1 -> OSC1
OSC1 -> LFO2 Rate
OSC2 -> OSC2 cutoff... etc

We were promised to have a small amount of space to upload and a tutorial section...
The men behind the server seem to be very busy this year |
