there is no such thing as "no melody" at all!once you have more than 1 note its a kind of melody...maybe your talking about boring old school way of using sequence of 16 notes into melody line..
making just rythem & grooves because some decision or an anouncment that "melody is dead" is not "to be a musician" to me but to be a pawn in a game.
i dont want to tease..i understand that yuli got sick of melodies but if youll take the most sucesfull artists in the genre..infected..astrix..gms..simon..they are all masters of melodies and this is why so much ppl love their music..with no melody it almost impossible to write "time-less" track...
My 2 cents..

100 % agree!
I think the melody is the essence of the music, not only for psytrance but for all music genres. Some of them have complex melodies, others more simple melodies, but when the melody is missing, all we have is just a collection of repetitive noises, and not music.
I think, just like Shachar said: artists like..infected..astrix...Astral... made timeless music because they were able to make complex melodies.
After you listen a good track, what it will stay in your head and play over and over again is the melody, not the percutions, bass line or sound effects...You will forget everything else after the track is over except the melody.
So, here's the trick ! Good & complex music will always require good & complex melodies !

thats just your opinion, not a fact. being melodic is not the only criteria for music. there are many many timeless unmelodic hits out there. remember Der Dritte Raum - Trommelmaschine, for instance?

Classic topic. Yuli can I ask you a question? When I hear you live there's one small melody on Ode Ae Sol that doesn't exist on the released version. Am I going insane or did you add something in the live version?

I was talking in general not about specific tracks or exceptions! First of all "Der Trommelmachine" it's an exception in this genre, and second, this was a good track, but i think "Halle Bop" it's more well known, and much better.
And if we talk about seriouse music... there is a book, "Gold Standard Song List" with the best 5000 tracks in the history (all musical genres). Let's see how many of them are melodic.

yeah, and let's see how many of them are generic bullcrap. i couldn't care less about that book, or does it mention hallucinogen - lsd or shakta - micronesia?
as for other examples, i'd throw in the first son kite album "minilogue". now that's good and supercomplex music, without any huge goa melodies!

...just because those are not psy trance tracks, this doesn't mean they are generic bullcrap...and don't worry there are also some old goa tunes mentiones aswell.
And another thing, this is about the "best" tracks in history, not about the most commercial tracks.
Also, nobody was talking about huge goa melodies..maybe except you, but about melody in general.
You may like or not the melodic music but this doesn't change the fact that "most" of the timeless tunes are melodic ones.
Anyway, i don't wanna argue with you on this subject...in the end, all we can share here are some points of view.

OMG people are really digging hard and deep here, this is very old...
To all the melody lovers... I have nothing against melodic music, in fact I make melodic music and made melodic music. And even when there is no apparent MELODY in the music, still the groove and the tuning of the percussion make the melody in the music.
What I meant with melody, is those uber-cheesy ( some might call it complicated, alas everyone and his opinion ) that appear exactly after the dramatic break with echoing kick drum, they appear from nothing and if one had enough pills he / she will jump through the rooftop and back. And actually when first time I heard this, I did too but since then I heard it few thousand times already and well.. it's so predicted and so uninteresting anymore... so since 2001 hehe or 2002 I am definitely not a fan of those melodies. If anyone wants to hear a super good melody, I advise to go and hear one of Nathan Fake remixes.. You will feel the difference ( or so I hope )
Pavel the Ode Ao Sol I play in my lives is boosted by extra looping some siren sounds and couple of melodies courtesy of ever creative and imaginative mr Eitan Reiter. They appear on his remix to Ode Ao Sol and I was so enchanted by them so he did me a favor and exported them clean for my usage. Way to go Eitan!!!

In my opinion a good groove and a good melody is necessary. Songs that rely only on groove are uninteresting after the first 30 seconds. The more melody that is added the harder it becomes to keep a groove. This is where musicianship comes in. If you are playing the same melody for 16 bars it becomes part of the groove. When you change the melody the groove changes. So to create these melodic changes subtlely and smoothely without altering the groove or feel of the song is where the true musician shines in trance music.
Dance music is easy to make if you follow a template (like regular trance - same chords make almost every song). To create dance music with new styles is very difficult. Especially in psychedelic dance music. The groove, melody, fx etc must work as one to create an over all ever flowing picture/melody. |
