Too add, The mixing volume is extremely important when mixing bass...
too low volume and you risk mixing the bass too loud, and to high volume and you risking mixing the bass too low....

not sure i agree entirely, as in essence (if you're mixing on monitors) the bass should sit well compared to the other elements of a track, this comparison can be achieved whatever volume (as long as you can hear it)
In a way, if you mix softly and you still hear the bassline detail it can be a good thing, as it shows there is a good level of detail in it...
NEVER mix too loudly, not only will it fuck up your mix in the present, it'll fuck up your mix in the future (when most of your hi-frequency hearing has been replaced by a beeeeeeeeeeeeep)
Just keep your monitors at a level you like IMO, but I do understand what New Era Scientist means... just that i don't mix in the same way
Peace

hey NikC, of course i mix in context to the other elements... and mixing too loud is not good, best is probably to mix at a moderate volume(its said that 85dBSPL is a good level) and fine tune the mix for its purpose.
i just mean that bass is a difficult element for our ears and that our hearing is not so sensitiv to it, which can lead to mixing it too loud, especially in headphones...
well there is lots of calculations that has to be in the equation to get it right...
now lets just say that you mix softly and you hear the bass in detail... crank the volume up and maybe the bass is too loud at that level...
well you allready told me you understood me so its okej

Yeah man i get you... specially with headphones man - it is one of the most difficult elements to get right in the mix!
Interesting with 85dB by the way.. will look more into that!
Peace!

Lastly, use (in cubase/nuendo or whichever sequencer i'm sure)the time delay settings in the channel (just under panning in the midi/audio channel setting).
changing where the bass lies by just a couple of milliseconds makes a Huge amount of difference to the bassline, often making it sound MUCH tighter and often giving that subtle "pro" edge to a bassline...
It's the details that count
Peace!

Foshizz!
I don't know any other sequencers well enough, so i will explain for all you cubase/nuendo users (I hope this will apply to you Wavelogix)
On the left hand side of the screen are the track settings (when a track is selected): e.g. Audio 1 (or Midi 1) then Inserts then Equalizers etc. in drop down lists...
In the main Audio 1 (midi 1) section there are three sliders:
Volume, Pan and Delay...
Delay is the one we're interested in...
Adjusting the delay normally will bring about very very noticeable time differences, HOWEVER, if you hold the shift key and adjust it the results are far more subtle...
With the bassline, my personal preference is to adjust this delay slider very very slightly minus. (between -1 and -6 generally depending on what I feel for ). I personally think it can make a bassline sound much more stable and secure with the kick (particularly with sidechain)!
Hope that's explained it
Peace

Yep this is a very good tip ! Moving the bass and/or kick a few clicks forward in time with this method will also give the track more apparent drive. Moving the snare backwards in time a bit may also help. |

im not an expert on phase so i would like some of the music gurus around here check this plugin... http://www.tritonedigital.com/phasetone.htm
btw, its free...
i only know that phase is very important when recording bass, because of mudiness and lack of clarity issues, so i would like to know how phase can be used to improve a psytrance bassline and and how this plugin can help .
thanks |
