I'm curious what is your favourite mp3 encoder.
I'm looking for the most transparent one (yeah, i know that word transparent don't match to word mp3 )

I use "lame" from Wavelab. When i make my home-made mastering where max peak is -1dB, after mp3 compression (320k hi quality) i got file with 0dB max peak. So even on HQ, lame still do many many changes to sound.           http://www.beatport.com/release/cross-the-atoms/1042450

it is like you say: hq 320kbps cons. but now i read on other forums that every version of lame is different. i read that LAME 3.93.1 is the best. from what i read, parameters are more important than i think: its better to use "joint-stereo" on 320k than "stereo", different kbps different other parameters... its creazy           http://www.beatport.com/release/cross-the-atoms/1042450

i had no idea but i checked it up and the comparison is between LAME 3.93.1 and 3.98.4. also it is dealing with 128kbps not 320.

i havent found any comparisons to the latest version/320, but i believe it either fixed or not relevant to higher bitrates we will likely use.

That depends on what speed you are broadcasting.

<= 128Kbps better use the 'old' Lame version.

> 128Kbps could also use the latest version.

a 320 LAME 3.99r encoded form FLAC usually sounds brighter than the original to my ears.. i have no idea why!

there is probably a better codec than LAME now anyway.

also it seems the online standard for audio that is muxed with a video stream to be about 128kbps CBR!! fukk sake do people really believe this is no quality difference!? crazy standards, i wish some people would open their EARS (fuck you youtube!)

o yeah, i'm also use my onboard mp3 encoder (Fraunhofer) from Cubase this one sounds better than Lame for me. This codec don't cut hi freqs and peaks are same like in wav file. even on my shitty soundsystem i hear differences for + to Fraunhofer           http://www.beatport.com/release/cross-the-atoms/1042450
