Hieronymous Bosch is one of my faves. The guy had some serious warped visions...probably some sort of mental illness. He drew these amazingly intricate and detailed apoctolyptic images with some bizzare religious imagery that could only come from the mind of somebody insane or having a wee talk w/ good ole' Dr. Hoffman. He lived in the middle ages, so it must have been some insanity. I'm sure during the time, he was seen as a heretic.
