Yup I'm asking that... Cus besides all the over the counter types like Bazzism, Kickmaker, Punch etc etc.. What synths have you had the best results from? I ask Because every once and awhile, I hear a kick that is so solid hard yet so smooth, it's as if it was carved from butter
I'm not talking about the super low bass or the thud from the parallel compression etc I'm talking the initial snap that has that almost held in place feel to it without any ring or sway in the timbre or even artifacts in the upper freq's .. just butter

Ok I can see Reverb being the smoothing agent here but the synth behind that sound is super fast..

Anyone?

what you describe sound like a 909 kick used as source.

to get that sound out of a kick you want something that round the transients and give thickness to the sound in the mids, some real weight. in hardware a suited preamp could do this i guess, maybe culture vulture too or both. in software i would look at tape emu, saturator it could give maybe good result

but you can get that kind of sound out of a kick wihtout any processing too it s all in the pitch sweep to get good density in the sound and butter like mids, or you could use a layer for the atttack that have that tickness, like a 909 attack maybe .
try demoing metrum it s flexible .
or the old way with audition maybe soundforge wavelab..but bazzism is fine imo what you dont like in it? i would not be surpised if the kick you describe come out of this plug

i will post you a sample later so you can tell me if it s what you re looking for.
to bad i dont have the api chanel strip right now to run the sound in it though !

a good eq could be helpfull too, if you can get what you are after out of the source. .. to make the highs more silky and inject good density in the sound

Yeah almost does but I don't remember my 909 sounding this smooth or clear
And even with a vsti synth making 909 type kicks the timbre moves. But like you said there's ways to hold it in place.. so I'm not 100 sure
I never said anything was wrong with Bazzism
I'm at that point where I have kicks in all keys at BPM points raw/compressed etc.. so I'm creating them in various synths, so far sylenth ,Massive. And it's probably my crap programming but the massive ones are really thin and digital sounding... I'm gonna tackle Diversion next But this year I'm going to start adding hardware to the table top I just have a little more to go and it's a tuff choice between 1 uber 2 channel processor maybe 2 an exteended holiday or a moog and a virus ungh!

anyway I look forward to checking your sample out thanks

could you post a sample of the kick ?

adern kick me could maybe suit you yes
zebra too.. ultrabeat..largo..
soft like audition wavelab and co offer lot of flexibility for the pitch modulation you can craft your kick exaclty like you want it and then fine tune it to the bassline key in a sampler if it don't degrade the sound too much.

offline pitch bending could be of higher quality too but this i m not sure, realtime is good enought on synths.
for me the key is really the pitch modulation curve..i use 2 envelops most of the time on synth for more flexibily.. the second one take care of the low mids/bass punch .

btw you can do this trick on any sound you want silkyer highs, on kicks it work great ,high pass the sound lower with a smooth slope and bring back harmonic with a good saturation that sound sliky , work great on the culture vulture but you will porbably find some plugs that offer good result, maybe exciter,tape/tube emu... if the sat is suited it should make the attack more hifi and expensive sounding , not harsh and digital

some tools can round the transients but at same time sound very punchy..thats perfect..sharp digital transient can be unpleasant on hears depending the sources, on some psy kicks for example..can make you want to lower the volume insteed of cranking it loud but after it s taste..

Ultrabeat is my favourite these days.

I use a pitched sine wave in the phase osc section, and rock a sample (usually hipassed) in the sample section.

I choose the sine osc for it's thump, and I choose the sample for it's mid/high bite. Easy to layer.

Actually, Ultrabeat just kicks ass in general.           Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room. ~Kurt Vonnegut

Loki: I'm on PC But now I know what an updated Attack would look like ;-)

PoM: Gonna play with kick me today I haven't in some time to be honest..
And yeah Zebra and Largo both should be able to produce some nice kicks... hmm largo has nice filters

yeah I can create them in soundforge never done it in Audition or wavelab but as you say you need to use a sampler after to get the key I assume it's not same method...?

Woodster77: soft or hard 2600 and if soft which one?

I haven't tried drums in ACE yet I'm slow

Anyone with a Mopho or voyager I would like to hear kicks from these

When I get that kick I'll share it but I'm more then sure it's not a sample or vst but even if it is .. it means it's getting treatment I can't give it ;(

i used to have a metalbox 8008 frac module, which was a part for part clone of the 808 kick, except it put out modular levels (10v p-p), and had extra controls. it was by far the highest output thing I've ever had in my studio, and would overload a cheap (Mackie) desk pre even on the minimum setting. that thing was just insane!           http://hermetechmastering.com : http://www.discogs.com/artist/Gregg+Janman : http://soundcloud.com/babaluma

Ultrabeat is my kick synth for the last 4-5 years.

All my tracks have kicks I made on Ultrabeat.

ace ime is really nice for kicks (i get much better sound than with zebra here). but i didn't find that i could get a variety of many good sounding kicks out of it. maybe that'll come when i got a better understanding of all the functionality it offers. still, it's easy to get similar results with ultrabeat (i got there 95% missing just a bit of that "analogue" sound of ace), and ultrabeat is much easier to use for a great variety of different kick sounds.

i haven't been using anything else for kicks after i tried ace and ultrabeat.

i don't need to synthesis my kicks, just use sample layers with EQ / Distortion / Comp to make fat and new tone.
But ultrabeat is pretty good for sure.
