hmmm, sounds pretty dodgy to me - I don't think the vocals work at all...

I've been toying with the idea of heading up to London next month for the live show in Camden, I just hope they play a few oldies if I do.

"The new album out by Younger Brother would have been better if Robert Smith of The Cure sang on it. The vocalist they got sucks and ruined the entire album."

well..i kind like it..

not the regular younger brother, that is, but i find it nice.

it is only natural it may not please the fans, the fans have been acompaning younger all over this years, it is a big change, but i certainly also understand the side of the artists to make something diferent, even if not sticking to the ideals...

Don't know if this one will be on the forthcoming
album. Personally I don't hope so

But each to their own...

I really don't think I'll be spending money on the new album, I have very low expectations of it now....
let's just hope I'm wrong

You know, Younger Brother clearly had a choice between pleasing long-term fans -- who are fans of underground electronic music -- and pleasing a more mainstream festival audience -- who are essentially fans of jamband-style rock music.

If they went with the first, they'd make good music but continue to scrape by financially. Nobody makes money from album sales anymore, and there aren't really enough psytrance/psychill events to provide an artist with enough bookings to make a decent living.

If they went with the second, they'd gig enough to pay the bills. The tradeoff would be that their best shot at success with that crowd would involve making music that catered to their tastes. As it happens, that means stuff that isn't really psychedelic at all -- at least not in the sense that we understand it. To me (and to many of you) it's generic and boring, much like the music of the Disco Biscuits and other "jamtronica" bands who make me want to stick nails in my ears.

You could call it "selling out," but I think that would be a pretty oversimplified view of a complex issue. We all need to get by in the world, and if you want to do that by making music you need to make music that will actually pay the bills. We can righteously shout about artistic integrity, but artistic integrity doesn't mean much when you have no retirement plan. So I can't blame Simon et al. for doing this, but I can't enjoy this music either. I just hope they keep up work on side projects that actually maintain my interest.

Really, electronic music is not a good way to make a living at all. I feel like artists should know this when they start out. If you want to make electronic music, don't give up your day job; that way you can maintain your artistic freedom and not endure the financial strain that's crushed a lot of good electronic musicians.

@herbivore: I don't blame Younger Brother for wanting to appeal to a broader audience. With "All I Want" and especially "Ribbon on a Branch" they had two excellent songs that also could attract new listeners and they are some of my favourite tracks by Younger Brother.

I'm more angry at myself that I pledged for the album. If could have listened to "Night Lead Me Astray" and Somnabula beforehand, I surely would not have pledged.
And I think it's a little unfair to let the older listeners pledge for a release with which they want to reach new listeners with a different taste of music. But then again it may be my own fault, I should have been able to read the signs before pledging...

have heard rumors from a mate who has brought Shpongle live to Australia this coming week that Night Lead Me Astray was the single that they thought would best garner support from the commercial sector but it won't be an entire album of that style.

I enjoy the music, having seen Coldplay live with a lot of reservation I was completely surprised by the psychedelic madness of their stage show and the way they performed and changed their music.

I enjoyed listening tot his track with my wife which is rare as our taste in music is very opposite.

Keen to see where this project goes along with the new Shpongle due in 2012

heh, simon + benji have been sending out updates to the pledgers for a while now...the one that simon sent out for the holidays was actually really fucking cool, nice little personal message that I really appreciated.

He did however mention that trance fans 'may well hate' the new album, but that an artist can only make what he feels inspires to in the moment.

I'm looking forward to hearing the album, I just hope I don't judge it harshly before I even listen to it simply because I like the old YB sound moreso than what I've heard from the new album.

finally... simon posford wakes up and goes more mainstream...i would like to see people say his name with names like massive attack, air and even radiohead, im just waiting for the day he will make a good songs album, combining with his unique sounds, crazy ideas, and technical abbilties he will be unstopable. simon my friend, leave the 500 people desert festivals, mannhatan is calling you... but sorry "night lead me..." or whatever its called is a piece of shit, and this singer is a disaster...and yes im talking about simon posford, not younger brother..

Actually I don't think you can. How can one ever judge the artistic integrity of an artist? How can one possibly think that YB does not enjoy this music and did not feel inspired to make this?

In some of their video and text blogs they were really enthusiastic about the new album (and about NLMA), and they really like it, they really wanted to do something new and are happy with the results. How can you not call that artistic integrity?

I believe them. Do you think they're acting? That it's all for the money? Come on, if it's for the money there are WAY easier routes for guys like Simon and Benji (ways a la Tiesto).

I did not like NLMA much, but I do like Pound a Rhythm and the samples I heard from Train TBC, can't really remember what I thought of their show at Ozora, sound quality was pretty band for me, so I don't want to judge based on that... So I'm curiously awaiting the new album and while I kind of like this Sonambula track, I don't think it will be on the album (or maybe as a bonus track), it's just an unmastered version of a remix they did for a William Orbit track.

I don't think you really read my post.

I have no idea what they think. Maybe they do really love playing bland-ass rock music. Power to 'em if they do. What they think isn't really relevant. My point was that they made a choice to make music that sells well and bores psytrancers over music that sells poorly and excites psytrancers. And I can't blame them for making this choice for whatever reason, because it's a tough world out there for electronic musicians.
