standard 4/4 kick line

trigger signal for sidechain -> bassline

bassline 1/16 and 1/16 triplet (edit some notes and voila)

filter on bassline/kick group

groups for bassline/trigger (sidechain)
bassline/kick
percussion
beats
leads
strings/pads
fx

often bypassed fx channel with delays and maximal 2 reverbs (long/short) -note: be sure to disable delays on the synths as often as you can, because you can always add delay after bouncing parts, never get rid of them.

on master bus following plugs:

silverspike tapeit2 for grabbing those moments or bouncing parts.

a limiter for quick listening and analysis (on bypass while composing, leveling)

waves paz analyzer for visual reference

last but not least an example track of any given artist, preferably wave for reference purposes and adjusting ears.

while most of these plugs are bypassed, cpu consumption is low and it saves a lot of time. but it has also a downside, with a template you sometimes forget to think outside of the box. it's important to experiment, for example with doubled bassline parts and different use of velocity.           soundcloud.com/epsylohm

You said the wisdom words, so why dont you try empty templates?

I thinks such an esctructured template limits creativity and originality. But if it works for u it´s ok i guess

sound surgeon because with this setup I always end up. not exactly with the same 4/4 kick through the whole song, but as a starting point it helps me to evolve stuff.

thujon yes as it's only a filter, delays and reverbs. sure I change settings, eq's, compressors and so on, but finally I always end up building this exact setups with some twists. like take reverb plug b instead of a.

brian it's like 3 plugins I have to disable, after that it's dry sound. all these effects except sidechain are used on demand (reverb, delay). the master output plugins are off except the analyzer. I just like to have them loaded up. groups are always done the same way, atleast how I work. Sometimes I need to add a group, like for doubling/hardpanning leads. cpu and vst meter never exceed 5% at this stage.

I think this whole setup thing comes from my modular days with buzz, where you had to chain things together, instead of having vst with bloated fx part. but if you think over your workflow, you'll see that some common things always reappear. that's why I save my time with actually composing instead of focusing on things I've built before.

I have a template that includes

*multiple colour coded midi and stereo audio tracks grouped in to folders (some of them are alredy given names such as kick, percussion1, percussion2, bass1, bass2 etc...for elements i know will be in there).
* sidechaining setup
* battery setup with a crappy kick loaded in (that immediately gets replaced) and a little sequence of 4x4 kick drum midi
* 16 tracks of virus ti midi and a the virus ti plugin loaded
* delay and reverb on the sends

it takes yonks to set all this up and its great to have it ready to go as soon as i start a fresh track so i can get ideas down quick.

have a nice day

I just realised how annoying it is to load everything again each time you start a track.

So i made a template...

-Battery
-A few synths
-Send reverbs and delays
-Sidechain group

The send channels are just empty channels.

So, you use this for mixing or modulating stuff? I don't really get the purpose.

one thing that it's worth not to forget is: later created groups can not send to earlier created groups in cubase sx. this can sometimes be annoying.

can't you load mixer setting on top of an old track or something?           Crackling universes dive into their own neverending crackle...

also empty... just have an idea, voice, melody or lyric to start from 0....
sure most of the times you end up using many groups, sinths, fx you already used but i only repeat them if the track takes me there?!?!?

if you start ebvery time with those templates you're half way to formula music 1+3=4 arghhhhhhhhhhh ....

ok you might do it for your favorite drum machine and that is logical but hope that not with all samples patched and to start with template'd sinth's xiiiiiiiiiiiii death to creativity the best thing about sinths is that you can make your own instrument......
