hi
as many here i've been using monitors for a long time now.
i've grown used to how they sound, learn to compensate where they need to and my tracks are sounding very good indeed but of there's clearly so much more space for improvement.
my question now is:
sometimes i hear, even in crappy speakers, problems i couldn't hear in my monitors.
do you think that this is the time i gather some cash and buy some better monitoring?
i fear my listening has improved a lot and maybe my monitors arent "accurate" enough to detect some flaws other monitors would?
does this make sense to you?
thanks

I'm feeling the same way as you now. I have a crappy pair of behringer truth 2031a's, I mean they work and they are actually decent. I also own a pair of beyerdynamic dt770 headphones and I can hear so much that is missing in the speakers.
I went to guitar center and listened to the dynaudio bm5a's they had there. I took my voice of cod album with because I know it really well and there were tons of sounds and little nuances that I had never heard before.
Thats when I realized that I should start saving and get some dynaudio speakers. So I think what you are saying makes perfect sense. You get what you pay for also makes sense. I payed only $300 for my behringer speakers, the bm5a's are $1000. So I guess it's understandable that they would be better.
Good luck on your decisions

there is defenately a point about the costs of speakers, but this has also A LOT to do with your acoustics!
you can have the best speakers and totally fucked up acoustics and your sound wont be much better than it is now
I would rather suggest you to check your acoustics well before you invest a whole lot in monitors and got still the same problem after that
just a little different point of view about this

cosign 100%
Try setting up your monitor speaker system as symmetrical positioned in the room as possible.
It a VERY good starting point. |

I've been using my monitors for 3 years and I'm very worried that if I get more expensive speakers I'll have trouble adjusting to the new sound of them.
Is this ridiculous, or will the change actually take some time to get used to? |

well, in my post i did say i've learnt my monitors and i can say i've learnt my room alongside.
i know how every corner performs, every angle, and played around with positioning inside the room more than once.
often i also check things like balance from outside the room too, which is a good measure. if the elements are still stable, the it's a worthy mix
my monitors are symmetrical positioned in the room and i've followed every possible rule about positioning, bought speaker stands, etc...
the comparasions i've made were all done in the same room.
turning the question around, i want speakers that perform better in the same conditions

tomos, if the new monitors suit your room, beware of big woofers in small roooms, you'll adjust in no time, and when you do you'll be very happy you swithed
