This just got released and I felt I had to say something about it since I canīt find any info around here about this release!
I really like their stuff!
check it out:
http://www.psyshop.com/shop/CDs/dps/dps1cd034.html
info:
A spongey citadel of squelchy bliss that can only be experienced while listening to the Yggdrasil sound. A Swedish duo masterpiece of world fusion beats baked with synthetic layers and acoustic deliverance.
Prose edda is a tale transcribing an anthological view within and beyond Nordic mythology. Transpired over eons of time, lost in translation and converted into this modern day musical context. This magical moment in recording history is now captured, sealed and digitally encoded for your audio consumption.
Digital Psionics has gone gold, this story needs to be told and we are honoured to present Prose edda to the public. Blending the digital and acoustic together has shone a new light into the psionic domain. It has been meticulously polished and mastered in the Swedish homelands to bring presence and light to the sound.
So lay back and sponge bath in this audio bliss.
Feel the froth foam float against your temples.
Breathe the Yggdrasil sound.

I've listened to it many times over the past week. There are a lot of good songs on here. I don't think the samples (even 120 second ones) do the songs justice. There are a few "We really like Shpongle!!!" moments, but overall the album is solid creativity. The overall sound of it (to me) is if you took Shpongle's "Tales of the inexpressible", Blowfish's "Puffed Up" and Warp Technique's "Make Animals Happy" and threw them in a blender. That might make it sound overly derivative, but it's not. It still sounds pretty original in spite of some (to me) obvious influences. |

Some of the songs of this album has been a huge positive surprise this year, the dark beats of phutureprimitive, crazyness of shpongle, mixed with acoustic instruments leads to an awesome atmosphere.
One of my favourite albums this year, only problem is I only like three (four) of the songs (Beyond the Borders of Sanity, amazing gneijs, don`t feed the toadstools).
A response to "shpongle like", I think this is a positive thing, why not "steal" some ideas and sounds from others and make it your own in a way you like it?
And they`re from scandinavia, which kicks ass |

I'd never heard of these guys before very recently.
The album is one of the best of 2009, I'd say. It's very, very intricate and contains a very high degree of very detailed editing and production. I can only think of a handful of producers who can manage this level of nuance in their tracks without it sounding like a big mess.
While I do think that bits of it sound quite shpongly, I have trouble thinking of many recent psychill artists who haven't been influenced by Shpongle to some extent, and I don't think their occasional similarity to the Shpongle sound is due to anything I could call a lack of creativity.
This album does what many psychill albums try to do and fail, which is to really take the listener on a journey. Yeah, I know, that's an absolutely awful cliche, but in this case I find it to be really appropriate. The album goes through a lot of different territory: expansive and claustrophobic, creepy and joyful, relaxed and energetic, electronic and acoustic.
In short, I think it's a very good album and will recommend it to all my chillhead friends. |

Actually, here not. There are territories, but no connecting bridges. It's the biggest and only major fault this album has, imo - it lacks a story. The tracks are exceptionally produced, it's true, but I think the focus was so much on the micro... the macro got left out. A common phenomenon
Shpongle 1 & 3, for example, have a good journey. An opening, a middle and an end. Prose Edda seems too meshed together, there's no slack... only some great moments where the melodies Really emerge from the chaos and shine. These points stand as highlights through-out the album and are memorable, but the rest kinda blends in too much without distinction. A little more slack, I suppose, would allow each track to breath and tell its own story more. Maybe as Yggdrasil will mature in their next release(s) we will see that... but for sure, this is an excellent excellent production. |
